hi..

im quite new to the electric guitar world.. i haf a epiphone les paul custom and a marshall mg15cdr..
i wld like to get a gd nice overdrive pedal and my budget is around 250..
i heard lots of great reviews abt the visual sound jh ... can u guys recommend me some gd overdrive pedals?? i wan a versatile one.. i prefer overdrive den distortion.. or do u guys think i should save more money and get a tube amp instead??

great choice
the visual sound pedal falls nicely into your budget. But if you want overdrive i would suggest the route 66 which i will be getting soon as well... the route 66 is a OD pedal with a compressor as well...
the jekyll and hyde abit overkill ... i had the older version and i sold it away.....

or you can just go for BOSS and get a normal od pedal frm them ... i tihnk around $100+ new..or check out this site

Since your new to electric guitars, I suggest its best to stick to pedals whilst you're forming your own opinion of the amp tones you like.

For OD pedals, I would recommend checking out 3 different ones;

(a) Boss OD3.
(b) Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer / VS Hyde & Jeckyl.
(c) Xotic AC Booster.

The Boss OD3 sounds decent for a Boss pedal, is cheap and the best value for the buck.

The Tubescreamer has a classic OD tone where the mid-range is noticeably coloured. I've grouped the VS pedal in with the TS since it has a separate mode that is VS's take on TS sounds as well as a separate mode for a more aggresive distortion voicing.

The AC booster is an OD pedal has sufficient gain, yet adds very little colour to the mid-range. It is tonally somewhat different from the TS yet the pedal like the TS, works well to step up a level on amps which are already overdriven. This is how I use my AC Booster to step up the gain to a liquid lead tone without adding additional midrange.

The Boss and TS can be purchased at Swee Lee. The VS and Xotic pedals at MrMisse.

hmm... i guess i should go to shops selling all these and start tryin some... but the bad thing is i gotta go alone.. tts sad..i dun haf much frenz who are seriously into guitar/music.. anyone wanan go wif me and guide me?? i wld love to make more frenz here and play guitar together.. lol..

i dun recommend buying visual sound products. seriously. tt time i bought de jh frm guitar77 it spoilt within 2 weeks. when i went back uncle dennis refused to refund me. he gave me a new 1 instead. then i went over to guitar connection. sum guy saw me buying it n he wanted to haf a look at it. den he tried it out n it too spoilt n this time it was within half hour. pls be warned. anyway de pedal does not haf much clarity on de distortion side n is kinda muddy. go for a blues driver. guess its still on of de better units around. n boss is trustable.

i personally recommend a BOSS OS-2. Its a distortion/overdrive pedal. It can produce just about the same overdrive sound as the OD-3. It is very flexible i'll say. If ur good at adjusting the knobs, you can either get a warm, mellow overdrive or a cranky punchy sound(im bad at describing). Somemore if u also need distortion, the os-2 can also give a sound like DS-1. I bought mine second hand for 70 dollars i think.

i think it would be most shop's policy not to refund but to give new one. my exp with trying VS pedals was better (went MISSE flea market) ... didn't really like the JH in the end... route 66 sounds better imo.

blues driver - very standard sounding. good tones... but odd interaction with my SD1 (i can only get one good sound - a jrock solo tone).

so far i still like my SD1 best.

yoz yoz... well.. different shop has different way of doing business... personally i tink sometimes have to depend on luck whether u get a good or bad pedal.... most of the shops dun refund cos they themselves cannot seek refund from the manufacturers themselves... they can only do 1 for 1 exchange.. which is why the best thing that some shops can do is a 1 for 1 exchange.... and also... always ask whether can refund or exchange before buying too.. that helps reduce more misunderstandings and unhappiness too... :lol: cheers!!!

so LL must go and try it out with ur guitar so hear if u really like the tone or not.
dun care so much abt how other pple look at u.
i used to think like u...but now even though i can't really play shit i'd still go and try. Lousy lousy lor...no big deal.

hope when i buy my route 66 i will get a decent one.
