noob question

hi, wana ask a noob question. why do we need to "setup" our guitar? what procedures is involved and what is the recommended interval for each setup? thanks.

A setup will allow your guitar to play at a better condition, the string height would be lowered thus allowing you to play more comfortably, intonation would be adjusted. Procedures involved adjusting the truss rod (if necessary), lowering of saddles and adjusting the intonation etc.

There is no recommended interval. Some would say 6 months once and some would do it once a year, it depends on individual and manufacturer and no standard interval. Btw bro, google is your best friend and try searching around on ther forum... All the best!!!

contrary to popular belief, a guitar/ bass is already set up at the factory before it is shipped out. the instrument needs further setting up simply because along the way, the set up is affected due to handling or temperature-related issues.

the player can also choose to have a subsequent set-up done because the factory-default settings are not compliant to one's needs eg: too high action

In my opinion a setup is very much like a medical checkup, basically ensuring that the guitar is in good working condition, since it corrects intonation problems, neck warpage, high action, etc...

IMO aspects of setting up is required knowledge for players, even if they don't have the capacity to do so. it makes one undeerstands one's instrument better & addresses aspects of our playing issues.

i think so too.. anyone seen jaco's vdo?
he switched his basses necks like nobody's business,
also used to carry this screwdriver or something even during interviews

ok to get a rough idea, example here is an intro about guitar set up hope it helps -
