Noise Gates

Hi guys, i use a beta aivin noise gate to kill off the hiss caused by engaged distortion pedals, compressor and wah by placing it after those effects in the signal chain.

I find that my tone is preserved and the effect gives a hell lot of volume boost but the threshold for its sensitivity seems very low. I have to put it to minimum( which reflects maximum noise gateting)
in order to cut off hissing sounds from distortion pedals.

I find that the pedal cannot gate out hissing from stacking of pedals unless the volume level is set real low and distortion levels too.

Is there better noise gates out there for this purpose? And is there any mods i could do to the pedal to improve its threshold?

And as a side note. Any views on the behringer nr100 nr300 noise gates?

lower the gain lah. then no need noise gate. or get better cables and patch cables? ive been thru the pain of hissing and noises, and lowering the gain and changing patch cables worked for me. also your power supply, must be regulated or isolated.

If you are getting that much noise from the signal chain that you have, it would be better to look at the individual components of the chain first, rather than change the noise gate. Getting a better noise gate may not be the answer to all your issues.

If getting something good is an issue, get an ISP Decimator G-String. It's considered the 'best' noise gate solution in a pedal format.

Mike brings up a good point. The source of the noise could be your guitar and the pedals in the signal chain are amplifying it. The distortion pedal introduces a lot of gain to the signal and the compressor makes softer sounds louder.

What pickups are you using in your guitar?

it's conventional to place the noise reduction unit at the end of the signal chain, this will give rise to the situation you are in where the noise reduction unit depends on other pedal(s) to trigger its treshold.

i'm doing the opposite; i place my noise reduction unit immediately after my guitar/ my booster pedal (guitar-(booster)-noise gate-(other effects)-amp):

this way, the noise reduction unit would only pay attention to the guitar/ booter's input to trigger it into action as oppossed to several pedals before itself. i find this arrangement gives me:

1. more control over my noise reduction unit- i tweak it quite independent of other pedals in the chain
2. more effective noise cancellation- because it 'obeys' lesser input to trigger its use

Hi thanks to all the suggestions =D

I believe that the source of my excess noises comes from the gain pedals as well as the compressor. But nevertheless would postition the noise gate in the first of my chain to see whether that helps cut the noise =D

I do like to play with a bit more gain to give myself some extra sustain and tone. Maybe i could look into using batteries for some distortion pedals to reduce the hissing it creates.

My biyang metal end king seems to be the noisiest at higher gain settings.
