but what's a gig?
and also what does it mean what people say they do covers?
also how do you define a metal music?

Gig can be referred as "job," first used by jazz musicians, attested from 1915 but said to have been in use c.1905. Not necessarily a rock show, a gig is any type of performance with audience, eg. belly dancing...

where are usually the places that they do gigs?

Depending on the scale of the show, it can range from the Indoor Theatre/Max Pavillion at the Expo/Esplanade Concert Hall (for international bands) to the Substation, Esplanade Waterfront/Recital Studio, *scape, The Arts House, The Glass Pavillion, Home Club (for local/regional shows). These are the more common venues, but some organizers also use lesser known places like jamming studios to put up shows. Really depends on availability sometimes.

Check the listings for the show your interested in, the venue will definitely be listed there. Hope that helps
