I am using a SZ320... and I don't know what pickups it is fitted with... The pickup have the word Duncan/Ibanez... what does that mean?

Will increasing the height of the pickup make the sound louder?

Can a 3-way H-H switch be modded to a 5-way switch?

Means Ibanez and Duncan colaborated to create the pickup

Yes

Yes. Plenty of resources on the internet about the wiring.

1. They're designed by Seymour Duncan for Ibanez.

2. Yes. Take note that if you adjust too high/low you will lose sustain among other things. Here's a link about adjusting pickup height:

3. If you want to drill your guitar it's possible. I don't recommend it though.
anyway ShredCow had tried with a similar model S520 using megaswitch and it can't fit in... so just fyi if you're intending to install a megaswitch.

But the pickups resemble which line of the duncan series (something like JB?)???

The swith is line very small leh... dunno can't fit a 5-way switch or not... but seriously must drill hole?

Can I change the noobs and switch to other patter or design?

Thanks guys...

hmm... there's a couple of things u can do. i'm not exactly sure why u want to install the 5 way switch. from what i know there's only a few variations config with a normal 5 way for H-H guitars, of which one is listed under the SD website.

http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/support/schematics/2hum_vol_5way-w-split.html

on the other hand, there're quite a few schematics if you choose to have a switch installed. it can be either drilling another 2/3-way switch, or getting a push-pull pot. You can simply select the config you're looking for under the SD website.

i suppose you could also ask ShredCows for opinions since he has done mods with a similar guitar before.

The SZ switch is different from the 5-way switchblade-type switch. The one you have is a toggle switch, like on Les Pauls. I'm not sure if they manufacture 5-way toggle switches but you can ask Davis or Guitar Connection if they have one.

The Duncan-Ibanez pickups are default on all SZ guitars since the start of this year, they're manufactured by Ibanez in collaboration with Seymour Duncan. Not really sure what they were based on but i think it was the SD Custom in bridge and '59 in neck. Quite good stock pickups IMO, I have them in my SZ320 too.

Sorry man, your 3-way is a les paul type toggle like what mero said. There's NO 5-way switch in that style.

But what you CAN do is do what I did.

Replace a pot with a pushpull pot for coil splitting. :) That would give you a good range of tones to play with.

However, the thing is, your switching is using an Ibanez frequented switching... its

1) Neck
2) Neck + Bridge coil split, inner coils, in parallel
3) Bridge

Thing is, I'm not clear how putting in the pushpull pot for coil spilt will function then, since there is already a wiring for coil split in the stock wiring. What I would assume is that you will have to lose the stock position 2 wiring so you'll end up with:

1) Neck (Split inner coil with PushPull)
2) Neck + Bridge(Neck + Bridge coil split, inner coils, with PushPull)
3) Bridge (Split inner coil with PushPull)

Not too big a lose, in my case, since I'm using that wiring.

Note you have 3 pots right? 2 vol. and 1 tone

So lets add in another push pull for out of phase.

Add it to the bridge hum (or neck).
Note that the out of phase switch acts as a coil selector when the bridge pup is selected alone (position 3) and split. So you can choose btw the inner coil or outer coil. Extremely useful when you got a pup with 2 coils with different eq/character, ala a Tonezone/PAF Pro.

And if you wanna go overkill... you can prob throw out a vol pot and put in 1 more push pull for the EMG-EXG active control... the is bascially a control that scoops your mids for some nice rhythm (or split coil stratty tones) and you can up the mids for some thick lead work. The SZ is already a mid heavy axe.

So if you do all 3, you'll get this.

1 vol pot with push pull for coil split
1 tone pot with push pull for phase
1 EMG-EXG

And your guitar will be very versatile. I think you'll spend like what, $100 for the stuff, all at once at Davis.

Btw, thor, the SZ isn't like the S series... different switch and body thickness ...

OIC... thanks for the input guys... I was exploring my options...

I wanted to have the ibanez RG H-H 5 way switch... but then can't fit in... haiz...

Just out of curiosity, can a 5 way switch be converted to a 3 way?

Shredcow: how does the pushpull switch works? must drill hole on the guitar? Can a fixed bridge be changed to a floyd rose in the future?

Many thanks guys...

Man, note your guitar has a 3-way toggle switch.

You cannot fit in a 3-way or 5-way blade switch usually on RGs or S series guitars without drilling/cutting.

The pushpull switches are just regular pots with a switch... just that you can pull them up or push them down to activate whatever wiring you have. No modifications, just replaces a pot.

And your fixed bridge is an Ibanez Gibraltar III bridge, I don't recall it being removable like the Gibson/Epiphone bridge. The Gibson bridge can be replaced with a floating trem that schaller manufactures.
You want a floyd, you gotta route. :)
