Hi! :D

So glad to discover a group of like-minded Singaporeans...

I've just purchased a laptop (IBM x31).... hope to do some simple sequencing with it....

Used to do it on a desktop, using the souncard's joystick/midi port.

Should I get a USB or Parallel or Serial to MIDI interface? Where can I purchase one? walked the whole of Sim Lim yesterday to no avail....

The last post on this subject here is 2002.... so I was wondering are there any new options out there?

Many thanks!

Hi Jordan,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but does the X-31 come with serial or parallel ports? Or do you have the docking bay.

There aren't many choices for parallel and serial interfaces that run on Win XP. M-audio and MOTU should have such interface but are difficult to get in Singapore.

Your best bet would be to go for a USB one. Try Midisport at www.sinamex.com.

Otherwise you may want to lok at Roland and Egosys. (again difficult to get in Singapore).

Thanks for your replies guys! :D

Yes, the X31 comes with parallel/usb2.0/Firewire....(love it!)

Yep... looks like I will go with the MidiSport from Sinamex...I actually found another one...UX16 from Yamaha... way too expensive ($136++)...

Thanks for all the help!

BTW- anyone using Sonar 3? How is it compared to Sonar 2?

Jordan,

I have a MOTU pocket express 2-in 4-out with SMPTE (parallel) and a Opcode (2in-2out/ parallel) to let go. Cheap cheap....

Please sms me at 93808256.

Regards.

Thanks Guys! - you have all been very helpful! :D

Do continue to send any other tips I may need....

My further advice on buying older MIDI interfaces is to make sure that it is compatible with the OS that you are using.

Older ones might not have support for new OS like Windows XP.

I was a little more fortuante; I bought a 2nd hand Midisport 8x8 which could not be detected by Win XP. Turns out that it needed a firmware update (ie change the Eproms). M-audio was kind enough to send it to me for free.

Does this mean all midiman 8x8 will have the same problem??

You really have to be carefull about the older devices. No support on the OS and you'll be sitting on a paperweight.

New ones should be alright since they would probably ship with the new Eproms.

However, if you are buying 2nd hand, try it out 1st on a Win XP systems. If it cannot be detected, grumble about it being not suitable for Win XP and bargain down the price. Then write to M-audio for your free upgrade.
(I wish I knew this before I bought it).
