Hi i'm a electric guitarist right now, and i've been playing for about half a year, however i really want to pick up an electric bass, but have no knowledge of bass and any techniques is it possible to self learn to play the bass for a start like one could do with an electric guitar? I got addicted to the bass after watching guthrie govan and his band and i gotta say jazz bass rocks.

Well , basically guitar to bass is a big jump.

Try playing slow easy songs first. Then when you bored playing the same old pieces , go youtube search for videos like slapping and popping etc.

Do some homework , practice your fingerings and have fun with the bass : D

fundamentally, if you can play guitar, there should be no problems with bass. however, the bass requires a re-think of how you approach your stuff. i tend to play my guitar stuff on the bass & get carried away all the time but that's not what it's all about 8-)

+1 to subversion. I am a bassist who used to be a lead guitarist and I agree that the approach on the 2 instruments are totally different. For guitar, the idea is to stand out. However for bass, it is more on laying the foundation for the melodic instruments to play. You can start by doing simple grooves and learning to 'click' with the drummer. Then progress to learning harder techniques ie slap, tap etc.

good luck!

Try simple riff like pop and rock stuff. Take note of some important music theory. Instead of treble clef now is Bass clef.

Next is whether you are preparing to do pick picking or finger picking. But i think pick picking should be easier to start with since you are a guitarist. Then do some walking bass.. should build up some foundation from there. Good luck

i played electric guitar, then changed to classical and now bass.

I would say playing classical with finger plucking made me totally avoid the pick now. With you fingers, there's just such a wider range of tones you can achieve.

it should be pretty easy to play bass if you're a guitarists...

the four strings are the same, and you'll just have to adjust to the wider frets, and work on finger plucking to get the tone.
