Need songs to learn(electric desu)

Hi guys, I just bought an electric guitar, I'm a 5-month old guitarist and I wanna play songs to upgrade my speed of my picking and my nimbleness of my fingers.

I don't have an amp yet(couldn't resist the offer for the electric I bought) but I wanna learn some songs. I don't know any theory stuff or whatever, I don't plan on becoming a lead nor do I dream of becoming a band member. In fact, even if I do become one, I'd be a rhythmist.

So anyway, as topic states, I wanna learn some songs and I can play a few solos(Stairway to Heaven, Hotel California, Layla). PLEASE I'M NOT INTO METAL OR POP so yeah. I'm more into rock, blues, jazz, and I don't have any electric guitar skills(sweep picking, tapping and etc.) I'm more into Joe Satriani and Eric Clapton, Jimi hendrix and yeah you get the picture.

If some songs require me to learn a skill(sweep picking or harmonics or whatever) I will learn it. So what I really need now are songs to play.
So keep those recommendations coming! (I do notice the forum here is kinda inactive)

hi! welcome to the world of electric guitar!

unfortunately im a hardrock and metal guitarist so i know mostly metal songs of the big thrash four (metallica, anthrax, megadeth, slayer)

and believe me, you can learn sweep picking and tapping later. they are techniques which can get quite complex and you wouldn't want that to get in the way of your basic electric skills. you will first need to learn how to hold your pick and alternate pick properly and you need your to drill that into your finger's muscle memory in order to keep up with the speed of some songs.

and i do believe you'll be a lead guitarist also. or else why learn electric at all? i believe you picked up electric guitar to be more than just a rhythmist alone.

yeah, think about that. and now ill leave ya with a few numbers which can start you off. according to your genre preferences, ive chose these few...

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze, Foxy Lady
Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight (i just love how he plays guitar)

well its been a while so i only know these 3.

happy learning!

cheers ;)

I see you're into blues rock and hard rock....

So here's a few suggestions, really classic songs.

Guns n roses- Sweet child o mine, november rain

Mr big- Green tinted sixties mind

Bon jovi- You give love a bad name

Slash-Godfather's theme( really fun piece)

Good luck and have fun!:)

For me I started learning classical songs on electric guitar with distortion.
you can try turkish march by mozart, Any of the 2 part inventions by bach try the right hand part. Prelude in C by bach yea all these songs. Then when your better and you want to play with someone u can try double violin concerto by bach summer 3rd movement by vivaldi. Playing such music will train your techniques like alternate picking, string skipping, tapping and sweep picking.

These are the songs I started with. It's fun to play!

Creed - One Last Breath

Eagles - Hotel California

Guns N Roses - Don't Cry
Guns N Roses - Knockin' On Heaven's Door

Joe Satriani - Always With Me, Always With You

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven

Scorpions - When The Smoke Is Going Down
Scorpions - Always Somewhere
Scorpions - Rock You Like a Hurricane

Van Halen - Ain't Talking Bout Love

Hey do try the nothing else matters solo. its really nice once youve get the hang of it.
and if you want to try some speed. Hmm you could try paul gilbert songs. maybe get out of my yard sweep picking version. although its hard. it helps a lot in my sweeping heh

Cool! Nice array of songs to work with! Anyway, will get started once I get my Vox amp(can't wait!)

@fenderrules: Even if I do become a lead, I'll only do it for emergencies like financial problems or whatever. I don't think I'm really cut out for lead. I'm more of a passive person so rhythm's more of my choice.

for a moment, i thought you were a baby(5 month old guitarist) hahahah.

yeah, i'd suggest

guns n roses - knocking on heaven's door
and
eric clapton - wonderful tonight(see some live versions for solo variations)

oh if you want fast...hmm...try scarified or technical difficulties by paul gilbert? his picking technique, one of the best in my opinion.

Haha. True. I tried learning those when I first started. Never managed to play them well, but everything else seemed to get easier after trying. XD
