hendrix was about fuzz face and marshall..
Imho, fuzz is not just about harsh, some do cleans up nicely when turning down the volume knob on the guitar. Another factor that have nice sounding fuzz is setting it at moderate gain and not just all the way up to 11....
digitech has got a jimi pedal which is sort of a fuzz modelled after his famous tunes and dunlop has got a hendrix fuzz wah. But how close is it going to sound like the real deal, it's hard to say... most player looking to get the classic fuzz tone usually gotten it from the boutique side...
As for using normal overdrive to get his tone, it might be a little bit difficult. The characteristic of fuzz is wider than most distortion or overdrive, not to mention those with germanium or sillicon etc.
