Hi all, im totally new to electric guitars and is looking to get one. I'm really inspired by Muse but i do not know how to get about buying a guitar. Hope you all would give me recommendations. and is it a must to have an amplifier? I have a budget of around $400 to $500. Thanks. Any help would be appreciated

u can search around the net for advices as well...there's plenty....search this forum...search www.ultimate-guitar.com forum....there r guitar website which offer advices as well ^^

i'm new to electric as well so i'll offer u a vague idea of wat i've learnt when i bought my 1st guitar.

but i think the bottomline is will u be in it in the long run or r u just trying it out and may not commit to it in the future...

if u're more on the trying phase...u can consider starter packs which comes with guitar, amp, and other accessories u need to get started ^^ they are very affordable but u'll probably see a need to upgrade to get a better sound off yur equipment. On the other hand, if u realise guitar's not for u....then u wouldn't have wasted too much resources.

if u're fairly sure u'd be in it for long....dun rush into it...if u need to save up a bit to get the gear u want...do it

if i'm not wrong u can play yur guitar thru a computer? but i haven't seen it for myself...
but the speakers or amps u play thru should determine more of the sound quality as compared to your guitar...so u shuld get a gd amp ^^

MaCca is right. You need to decide whether you would be into guitar for a long time or just to try it out. If possible, it is best to borrow a guitar from a friend. Does not really need to be an electric. Just play around with it. If you really think you have the interest then commit to buying the gear.
Well for you budget, i can tell you that it would be hard to get the good stuff. You have to put into consideration a gutiar, an amp, picks, cables, strap. The 2 most expensive of course would be the guitar and amp. Both are equally important. A good guitar paired with a lousy amp would sound bad, a bad guitar paired with a good amp would still sound bad. You need to have a good balance. If you are into muse, you most prob would need effects and they cost money again. Best is to get a starter pack first, even though they are really that good. But they should last you for at least half a year before you start to "outgrow" it. Do loads of research before buying anything, even better if you have a friend who knows his stuff to go with you to test out guitars. Most important buy a guitar and amp that you like, not what ppl say is nice. It is you who is going to play it after all.

at night, i play amplifier-less... (refer above pic).

there are many avenues to acquire gear. for the budget restricted, the starter pack makes sense. others would scout for used units to get a good deal for the money, depending what's on sale.

i wouldn't assign an expiry period pertaining to starter-grade products because it's not like they are gonna fall apart or something. also, the tollerance rate for gear differs across individuals, if you can live with your initial start-up gear for more than half a year, so be it. moving on to other gear of a different grade is about having the fund$ to do so & the opportunity that comes by (eg: SALE), regardless of when it happens.

starter packs are good for starters like you and those who aren't serious in playing guitar. there's a lot of starter packs that comes along with amps.

you dont really need amplifiers to play the electric. the pic that sub showed is only applicable if you have effect pedals since they have batteries/AC adapters that provide the electricity to the headphones to produce sound. so dont try to connect headphones to the guitar! apart from headphones, you can replace it with a normal speaker.

seeing that you're inspired by muse, there's yamaha pacifica 120s, a similarly shaped guitar, like matthew bellamy's mansons, with 2 humbuckers.

i'm not sure it's discontinued already (cant find it in the yamaha site)... maybe if you're a serious guitar player in the future, do look out for it.

thanks all for suggestions and replies

i was thinking about getting the starters pack offer at the city music sale
comes with amplifier too
however, i tried to search online for the brand craftsman but was unable to find a lot of reviews
is the brand reliable?

it's a good starter deal- tried them recently. i'd recommend the GS90 not because it reeks of a certain famous guitar but it being a good player per se.

tried craftsman SG copy guitar in jamming studios before. pretty decent guitar, but not my type of sound...

it'll probably go well for you. alternatively, try out the guitars first hand apart from just relying on reviews
