Need help with (show me what i'm looking for)!

Looked at it briefly... All down stroke ma... With some muting on the fretting hand...

It goes like down down down - pause- down down down

Correct me if im wrong

if u're only looking for the verse then its just mute mute play mute or mute mute play play. take ur pick. oh and yes all down strokes cos the mutes are just for the bass strings :)

well the muted parts are basically the low E A D strings, playing them either using ur fretting hand to mute or ur palm to mute as u strum.

Then why not start with a song that has a simpler strumming pattern? Slowly progress up. Chords are simple but a lot of down strokes and palm mutes. I take it you're a beginner? Start with songs like Fall For You. Or Wake Me Up When September Ends.

Jellybean: thanks. i suppose that's a simple song too though. (because of the chords involved). Can you tell me the strumming pattern for both of the songs you've mentioned? thanks!

currently i'm learning A lonely sept - plain white t's. Gbm, D,E,A only. Having problems with transition from Emajor to Gbm. :( any tips?

i wun recommend using a capo as an easy way out. just practice chord changes really slowly out of the song context. take the 2 chords u have problem switching and play them repeatedly for a minute. it works wonders when u get back into the song. i did that for my 1st few songs when i started out and it helped me. :)

F#m is a barre chord. Barre chords are definitely more advanced that strumming patterns in my opinion. And anyway, practising basic chord progressions is useful. Look at songs like Lifehouse's You And Me. Basic G key prog. Or Yellowcard's One Year Six Months. Basic G key song. It's not an easy way out. It's improving on what's at hand first.

for improving what's at hand, i'd recommend doing other songs that dont have barre chords 1st. but in the end if one is to cont playing a guitar and wanna improve, learning the dreaded barre is inevitable :p

Hahah agreed. but as a beginner it's not advisable. Not yet. Learn open chords first. If one can't even change between open chords, wanna learn barre? It's like asking someone to do a gig when he can't even get past the first verse... Of the first song. :D

Hi jellybean,

with ref. to fall for you - secondhand serenade.

Can you check whether my strumming pattern is right?
Verse- Down ( hold for 1 measure) /chord
Chorus- ?? 4 downstrokes/chord?
Bridge - 2 downstrokes/chord.

that's what guitarsage taught on the youtube video. any other variation?

I watched a few covers. upstrokes are shown too. can you advise on that?

thanks!!

I don't mind learning barre chords though.

Can't find a song that:-

1) Easy chords + chord progression.
2) Easy strumming pattern (that is available readily on the web)

The only one that fits the bill is lonely sept - plain white t's.

while strumming, i can hear the tune, so i guess it's okay.

hmmm...true also :p guess he'll just have to learn barre chords as he goes along. heh :D hmmm as for easy songs, try pieces by sum 41. its all power chords, which i think are a pretty fun way to learn barre chords :D and in all honesty, u dun need to follow the strumming pattern exactly. unless of cos its a pretty straightfoward riff and the strums are pretty obviously spaced.

eh why dont you use your own strumming pattern? like maybe downstroke plam mute down up , down plam mute down up. use your own pattern la?

Yeah, strumming pattern, for me, it really develops naturally. At least I don't remember trying to figure the strumming pattern when I'm learning a song. It's like, feel good, sound good, do it.

Anyway barre chords are just chords in the shape of E in the CAGED system. Nothing too complicated.
