Hi everyone, I have just bought a PRS Guitar Signature Paul Allender Series. It comes with an EMG pickups for both the neck and bridge. I need to know what EMG pickup is this? photo can be found on the link below.... I need your help as i would like to change the pickups. It's not what i expected. I prefer something more Heavy Metal / Rock like seymour Duncan Blackout tone.

LOL how can you not know the specs of the guitar before you buy it?
You can easily find it online
http://www.prsguitars.com/allender/specs.php
It says 81tw bridge and 89 neck.
Oh and btw, emgs are regarded as one of the best heavy metal pickups...
Someone tell me what pickup is more heavy metal than emg 81, which is basically 81tw without coil tap

Hey bro, i sincerely appreciate your help. I'm a beginner, i was so excited to buy the guitar till i forget about all the needs. hahaha. 1 more thing, the sound is too buzzing and the clean tone is soft. anything that i need to know?

Well, you don't have to change your pickups. Pickups only contributes to a fraction of your tone. You have to consider what amp, or pedals you are using. Like wil said, you can't get more "metal" than an emg81.

From my experience. EMG cleans are considered very loud as compared to other pickups. So when you say the clean tone is too soft, I find it a bit weird. Is you're drive channel level set too high? If not, it could be something wrong with your pickups.

Play around with the EQ on your amp/pedals. If you're looking for a metal tone, I suggest lowering the mids (lower than 11o clock) and increasing the bass and treble accordingly.

For a beginner to have a prs, you're ver fortunate already. Trust me, there's no need to change the pickups.

sorry But I have to disagree that pickups contribute too a Fraction of tone. They Actually play a big part to How you sound and (possibly) play. If he changed his emgs to vintage style paf pickups, his tone would sound very different.

Anyway, back to the main topic, can you tell us What amp you're using and the settings as well?

Yeah, do inform us on your rig. What amp, what pedals, what settings etc.

I always thought that pickups can only contribute so much but that just my personal opinion ah haha.
To me, vintage paf pickups with a metal zone will be closer to the metal tone as compared to emg81 with a ds-1. Yaaa sayin? :D

I rather see it as your pickups is the back bone structure to your tone, with pedals and amps coloring it to become the final guitar tones output we hear.

Hi gentlemens, The problem im facing right now when i plug my guitar to my multi effects to amp, i cant get a loud clean sound. But when i plug my another guitar it is fine. The setting is the same but i still cant get the tone. I went to Tymusic to have it check, they told me my guitar is fine and recommended me to bring my multi effects to try. Im using a basic multi effect Digitech Rp 90 and Samick amp LA10R. Do i really have to change the pickups? The another guitar im using is Jackson Dinky with Dave Mustaine Live Wire Pickup for the Neck & Seymour Duncan Blackout For The Birgde. pls help me my fellow musicians!

Exactly my thoughts! Haha.

1) replace battery
2) It could be your pickup height. Drive sounds won't vary much from pickup height but more clear differences in clean tone.

Try the battery thing first. If it doesn't work then consider the pickup height.

Ok, once i get my guitar from tymusic. I will do as u said! Thanks everyone for the help! We've been great....

EMGs are meant to be very clear sounding. They make your strings sound balanced but they don't give you dynamics.

If the tone is muddy, change the battery. That is all. If you are looking for a heavy sound, stick to using 9v cos 18v increases the headroom which IMO is more for the solo kinda stuff.
