My Guitar Project IV – 10-String Classical Guitar

I have always been intimidated with the awesome 10-string classical guitar. My first “encounter” with this “reclusive” instrument was pictures of maestro Narcisco Yepes and numerous programme on the radio during the 1970’s. A standard 6-string classical guitar is already quite intimidating for me, and what more a 10-string classical guitar. This is the inspiration for my next guitar project.

This is where the story begins. It all started with my craving to explore this mysterious instrument. I have been wondering what would it be like to hold on to a fingerboard more than twice the width of a normal acoustic or electric guitar. Will the guitar be top heavy, how do I fret all 10 strings when I have only 4 fingers on my left hand, etc,,,etc,,,,. What better way than to actually hold one in my hands. The 10-strings classical guitar is nowhere to be found in Singapore. They are not even in stock in any of the guitar shop here in Singapore.

To hold one, I have two choices; I can either import a 10-string classical guitar or build one myself. The choice was clear. With my pair of hands drawing close to retirement while time and tide is not waiting for me, I decided that it was time for my next guitar project.

With no experience building a guitar and no tools or proper equipment to build it myself, I have been truly blessed with my good friend luthier Sen Goh C.L. . I believe he is the only self-taught classical guitar luthier in Singapore that is still building classical guitar today.

Luthier Sen has kindly consented to help me with the structure and acoustic part while I undertake the artistic and finishing part of this project.

All the materials for this project have been procured and work has begun.

I managed to purchase a set of master-grade Carpathian Spruce.
