Anyone here knows how to play that crazy fill-in in the song.. It's somewhere about 30seconds into the song.. and many times later in the song too.. Hope someone can tell me how to play it (i.e. which toms to hit in what sequence).. Thanks!

yup! i already watched many youtube videos, lol still cant figure out... somebody should make a lesson for that song lol.. and teach me for next soft drummer meet up :D

try guitar po 5 , can off / soften the other instru , and only hear the drums
got notes somemore

hah thx mel! i found that website before, through a link from youtube (think the fella played the drums cover for that song). Anyway, you know how I could print it A4? can't print it as a pic, it's too small =\

if i'm not wrong its 16th note triplets, starting with 2 on the snare. i'm not sure but my guess is (also because its a pattern i'm more familiar with): SD SD FT FT BD BD x 3 plus one Flam on the snare.

i saw this in note form somewhere can't remember... search it. although i don't quite agree with the guy's translation, he also puts it as 16th note triplets.

any good exercises to share on practicing triplets? i tend to go back into fours at faster speed... sian. or maybe it's the way i hold this sticks. i'm paranoid about that, 'coz it just seems to fundamental that if i get it wrong, i'm scared i'll never make it good :?

Share with you something my teacher taught me for triplets. Set your metronome slow. Maybe 50 to 60bpm. Play quarter notes, then eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and then triplets, without any breaks in between. Then do the same thing backwards. The tricky one is working backwards. It's not easy to go from triplets back to sixteenth notes.

That will help improve your triplets consistency.

Oh and your grip does have a certain effect on your strokes too.

Hope this helps you a little :D

cool i'll try that tmr morning, thx a lot =)

just a question on grips. for the fingers to do the work, are your last 3 fingers (middle, ring and pinkie) curled around the stick or opened up when you're "using your fingers" to do those fast strokes.

eh mel, noob question.....
from me....

triplets as in using both sticks but start/accent on every other stick ...
or three notes in one hand??

thank you

to the others.... DONT LAUGH!!!! hahahahahaha

dull

try this

R l r L r l R l r L r l
count like this- 1 trip let 2 trip let 3 trip let 4 trip let
metronome plays on ever quater note count

you can use one hand... just that its gonna be harder to do it at high speeds... but if you gonna do it with one hand a good example will be the moeller technique...

About gripping, it depends on which finger is your fulcrum. It can be your index or middle finger. Personally, my index finger is the fulcrum. So the thumb and index fingers have to be rather firm (not too stiff though). The other fingers will wrap around the sticks loosely. Those loose fingers will do most of the work (something like the snapping action) when you play fast strokes.

A common mistake is sticking out the pinkie unknowingly. My left pinkie has this bad habit of sticking out! I had to be corrected by my teacher yesterday lol.

reuben's method is one way you can go about approaching triplets. There are some ways you can play triplets.

rlr lrl
or
rll rll
or even for some
lrr lrr

I usually use the first one. I use the second one sometimes depending on the rolls I play.

It's a little easier if you practise triplets if you accent the 1st note of every 3 strokes. Like:
Rlr Lrl

But don't become overly dependent on the accents though. It's equally important to practise playing triplets without the accents. I'm still trying to curb the habit of being dependent on the accents myself lol.

Hope this helps a little :D

thanx reuben and mel....
i understand and know about playing triplets..
and most of my triplets playing are all in
Rlr Lrl

coz i was wondering if mel meant playing triplets as in

Rrr Lll Rrr Lll
triplets playing in one hand

that's a dave weckl exercise to train up your rudiments... and only reason i don't do it vigourously is that i'm constantly scared i'm holding my sticks the wrong way!!! :?
