Monitor speakers

haha i'm thinking of the same thing.

i think monitor speakers are connected by dedicated 1/4" mono cables. that means 1 1/4" cable for each channel. PCs have the 1/8" stereo jack on the mainboard.

My plan is to use the dedicated 1/4" line outs i have on my line6 toneport. you probably need a USB audio interface like mine to do that.

haha. you need monitor speakers for your PC usage?! haha. thats like.. man. oh well, some people have their own preferences. yeah.. monitor speakers uses XLR and 1/4" inputs. So i guess, you gotta get a USB interface to fit your com to ur monitor speakers, or simply DIY your own cable. 1/8" to 1/4". ;)

Yah kinda weird right use monitor speakers on the pc..but I play my guitar mostly plugged to the pc coz sometimes I like to record stuff too. Monitor speakers have better output sound I guess. What is this USB Audio Interface you guys talked abt, got any pic? Can't I just use those 1/8" to 1/4" jack adaptor instead?

better use audio interface. they have dedicated Digital to analog converter for your listening. also they have volume control to drive the speaker monitor which some of them don't have it.
what monitor you are planning to use it?

Not sure yet but somewhere around my budget..but if I use an audio interface wouldn't my soundcard be rendered useless? its an xfi, a good soundcard, its a waste if I don't use it.

creative XFI? yes it's good soundcard for gaming, and hifi stuff...but not for mixing stuff..although those card still usefull..M-audio has cheap stuff rite now..and probably ESI...if you mean to use the computer for recording..better to upgrade it..but if just for your listening and maybe bit tracking...use altec lansing is fine..as long you don't mind with the result..

my advice is..know what you need and what you want..and you'll save hundred bucks..

My computer is a dual core with 2gb of ram, I think shouldn't be a problem. I'm using a software mixer for my recording and an altec lansing 2.1 speakers..the problem is I'm not sure if these speakers are meant for heavy distortion sound, as sooner or later might damage the drivers. Yeah Iwouldn't want to spend unnecessarily and waste on things that I might not even need. I reckon you are quite knowledgeable on this, so appreciate it if you could help me out.

your computer setup probably is a good start..then maybe after this you need to take this consideration

1. are you pro musician who need your work recorded or just hobby
2. do you record your own or others materials (drum, bass, etc)..
3. do you have your own studio with proper acoustic treatment? or you just used your own bedroom..

the answer would lead to proper gear setup you need for your need..I always said..grow as needed..but doesn't mean that you buy cheap stuff now and expensive stuff later..the important this..the gear will suit your needs..doesn't matter how cheap or expensive they are..

this will save you hundreds buck from buying something that you don't need and end up selling it..

Its more of a hobby and leisure, I'm far from being a pro, just a bedroom guitarist in fact. The speakers tend to crackle abit when I hit bassier notes, it's not so pleasing on the ear plus and as I mentioned might get damaged. I could just upgrade to a more powerful multimedia speakers but I'm not sure if any of them are meant for heavy distortion.

well my advice is here..

1. sell the XFI and get the firewire based soundcard with built in preamp. you can do alot of thing with this..now and in the 2-3years ahead..echo audiofire 2 would be a good start or maybe some M-audio stuff.
2. get good studio monitor..something small but good sound..yamaha HS50M are cheap or maybe the cheapest from Maudio..this monitor are active so they can get the load within their spec.
3. get microphone..you might want to record your voice or just having fun with it..maybe some podcast project..

it might be some investment but in 2-3years ahead u won't bother to switch the gear..since this setup already served the purpose..and the setup can do some hifi-games-or just headphone listening...

i got couple friend who still making money from old echo layla and motu..and pair of NS10..

I'll take note of your suggestions but in the end will have to see how much I can spend. I got a better picture now, thanks for taking time explaining.

ballpark figure probably around 350-450 for decent soundcard (echo audio sells around 375sing here) and I can see the cheapest monitor from Maudio for 270SING..sinamex is their distributor.
so for good system aroun 750 to 1000ish..

whoa...that much? I was thinking along max $500 as I never thought about audio interface. Will consider, I don't wan to spend so much as what I'm doing is for fun and leisure.

so better spend on decent monitor and use your soundcard. yamaha HS50M is supposed good with good pricing..dunno how much they sell in sing..

what I meant with preamp on audio interface is microphone preamp. you need this to hookup your microphone. if you have pasive monitor you have to connected to dedicated amplifier. sometimes you can find cheap pasif monitor with real good amp for cheap..
