Microkorg vs Microkorg XL

Sound-wise, is Microkorg XL really better? Don't want to sell off my Microkorg if that isn't the case :)
Would appreciate the opinions people; especially from current XL users :)

Depends if it suits your needs. If you are playing just bass and leads, the Microkorg is still good enough.

But if you want to play chords, brass stabs, you might want to upgrade to the XL.

To me, the R3 which the MicroKorg XL is related to, sounds better than the older generation MS2000 on which the Microkorg is based on.

However, it's your ears and you should go down to City Music and have a go at the Microkorg XL before you decide.

MicroKorg vs XL

I suppose XL feels slightly more solid where keys are concerned, and there's definitely some slight difference in sonic quality, not necessarily better or worse. It would all depend on personal preference. The knobs and display feel more solid on the XL.

Personally, I feel that ditching the MicroKorg for the XL is not something you should think about until you've plumbed the depths of the former's sonic capability by creating you own patches from scratch. I've got 90% customized patches on my MicroKorg and I certainly would not trade that for XL now.

Speaking of SysEx patches for synths, I wonder if there is a platform for exchange on soft... and I would love to get feedback on cross model SysEx patch loading between the MicroKorg, XL, and R3.

I agree with what's been mentioned already for the most part.

One important difference between the two is that i thought the XL was a major pain in the backside to program patches on. The matrix approach on the original microKorg was pretty intuitive once you got used to it. Editing on the small screen on the XL is too time consuming and frustrating for me.

I prefer the sound on the XL but they are different and with synthesizers there's often no simple answer to the question of which of the devices sounds better. It suffices to say that the microKorg XL sounds more like an analogue synthesizer than the old model. Both will produce fat leads and basses but the XL will also be better for pads and other things that require you to play more notes at once because of the increase in polyphony from 4 to 8.

But of course, it's a lot of fun buying new stuff just for the hell of it too! Toying around with some new piece of gear can be an inspiration in itself.
