Micro Series: The Laptop sessions…

…a series of miniature gigs to yank the apathetic listener back into the intimacy that should exist between the sound and the mind

From computers that fills up an entire room to devices that fits into the palm of your hand, the laptop has not only made computing portable, it is also fast becoming a “musical instrument” of its own in this fast technology growing era.

Micro Series showcases musicians, or Artistes of different genres crafting their works in front of a live audience. The Laptop Sessions will feature the rhythmic and haunting performances of Life Without Dreams, The Escapist Theorist, Ba3s and ESPER from NUS/EML, who, aided by their portable computers as part of their instrumentation, will attempt to push music beyond the boundaries of tradition into a world of transcendental sound.

Date: 15th April 2006, Saturday
Time: 1900-2200hrs
Venue: The Substation Ltd. 45 Armenian Street. 2nd Floor. Dance Studio
Performers: Life Without Dreams, The Escapist Theorist, Ba3s and ESPER
Admission prices: Pay-As-You-Feel

Performers notes:
Life Without Dreams
Life Without Dreams, is a result of three individuals who are searching for an outlet to develop ideas and concepts which do not fit in the context of their current bands. Consisting of members from IF / Phorous, Death of Cinema and Documentary in Amber, the trio aims to deliver conceptually structured sounds painted on the canvas of silence.

The Escapist Theorist
The Escapist Theorist was formed as an avenue for singer songwriter Marcos Destructos to continue performing songs of his previous band Systemless after they disbanded. Initially playing under the moniker One Man Nation, he has infected the ears of the underground with tours in South East Asia and Europe introducing them to his brand of folky electronic music with its undeniable punk influence.

Ba3s
An experimental three piece band that challenges the mindset of a typical band, Ba3s experiments with the sonic capabilities of the bass guitar by putting the bass as the main focus of the aural mix by having three bassists. The band creates music by layering and interweaving bass lines and melodies over preprogrammed samples.

ESPER
ESPER is the alias of a 22 yr old Singaporean who produces dark, dystopic Detroit inspired electro with occasional diversions into jungle, acid house and 8-bit retro videogame sounds. He is currently in the NUS Electronic Music Lab (www.eml.org.sg) and has performed in some of their gigs since late 2004. The NUS EML is an on-campus arts group supported and managed by NUS Centre for the Arts.

Softer
Head honcho of the MyFunkyTurntable label, Softer has always been inimitable when it comes to music and sound manipulation working with the concept of 'closed circuitry' using field recordings and acoustic improvisations. His journey into the world of electronics spans a healthy 5 to 6 years having appearances in numerous sonic arts events including the recent Resonator Series. Softer, tingles microscopic lush minimal perfection.

Good show :)

Was unfortunate that there were backing track hiccups in a few places- ba3s was interesting with that handphone on bass strings stunt as well as softer's harmonica modulation

yea. it was so crappy. Need to re-work that part again. hahahaa..well, no matter how much you try at home, you'll never know till you're on the ground. But hey, first gig for something that we slapped together in a couple of weeks. ok lah, all still standing if you know what I mean ;) We may be playing again in May. Should be better than. Thanks.
