Try practicing that groove along to a metronome at the same bpm as the song until you are very comfortable with it first. If you are still not stable playing it, you should bring down the bpm and practice it at a slower tempo before bringing it back up to speed.

It could also be because you cannot really hear the music clearly when you start hitting on the drums. It might work better if you can hear the music through headphones as well.
