I used to be a metalhead wannabe. My 1st guitar is a Jackson Kelly. That was almost 6 years ago. Over the years I improved and improved, my taste changed and changed, and I'm being more and more versatile. I needed a guitar that is versatile. I can't play jazz on my Kelly cuz that would look very wrong. [some might say: the guitar's shape doesn't matter ok!] But it DOES matter. I tried many guitars. Ibanez's neck too wide, Les Paul too heavy, Schecter's neck too thick, Strat... Have a Strat already. And I ended up with the Cort KX Custom.
This guitar plays awesomely good. It has the 2nd best neck for me [1st being a parker fly's neck but the price...]. The body's thickness is just right for me. ALMOST everything is right for me except, a fixed bridge.
I'm too used to playing a guitar with a whammy bar. I don't really fancy those whammy stunts that metal guitarists always perform but rather, I love the vibrato effect that a whammy bar can achieve. When we do vibrato with our fretting hand only [hold a note and shake], the pitch goes up. This is the opposite when done with a whammy bar, the pitch goes down and up, giving a note more of a vocal sound. The only way to achieve this effect with the fretting hand only, is to bend a string and do vibrato.
So I tried to bend/pre-bend and do vibrato on the notes that I want to have this awesome vibrato effect but, there are times when this is just impossible. I had the evil thought of routing the guitar but, it is expensive and might not worth the money and work. Sell the guitar? Haha. I don't think anyone wants a Cort right? I bought this babe in Swee Lee and I think it was there for a few years already.
I blame Shawn Lane for doing all those awesome vibrato with his whammy bar. Believe me. Fretting hand vibrato and whammy bar vibrato are not the same. Check Shawn Lane out and you will understand.
But I still have the thought of adding a whammy bar on my guitar. The inability to do those awesome vibratos makes me not happy!
