Mandopop vs Western Pop Vocal Style/Technique?

HI all,

I've been looking around for vocal schools and after researching I've realized that there are different types in the Singaporean industry.

Of course first we have the "traditional music school" type where you train your vocals for exams e.g ABRSM. They teach mostly classical technique and student body comprises of mostly kids, so I'll feel a little paiseh to enroll there la since I'm no longer one.

I also came across rock academies, performing arts courses and private technique instructors.

What was really an eye opener to me was the abundance of chinese music schools offering mandopop vocal lessons. It seems to me that these schools are the dominant ones in the industry O_O And certain schools even have artiste grooming programmes in which if you partake in you stand a chance of a record deal. This I found really interesting bcos given the advent of technology and social media in recent years, most "western" record labels scout talent who already have an existing fanbase, not raw talent that has yet to prove that he has the "X factor". You simply don't see this music label-music academy/talent auditions business model in Western world.

Anyway I'm getting off-topic, but since I'm interested in taking vocal lessons, I'm just wondering if there is a difference in the vocal techniques that chinese and western pop artistes use. For me I do notice there is, but I can't figure out or pin point what it is. Similarly I wonder if the techniques taught in mandopop schools are different that those in more western/traditional ones.

I can speak chinese well, but I personally don't like mandopop as much as I like western pop. I don't think it'd be detrimental to go learn in a chinese school right? I only worry that a they will not allow me to sing english songs, or be able to correct my diction when it comes to it.

Just wondering.

Sorry if I come across as very suaku lol :p

Some of the mandopop dominant school do provide western pop songs path. I just attended a workshop by fm pop music school. They do hv teacher specialized in western pop, the teacher don't even know how to speak Chinese (or maybe just a little). But according to the response during the workshop, is like 95% wants to learn mandopop lor. Ya the 2 styles are different.

Actually other vocal music school with Chinese dominant will allow u to sing English songs too. Cos I attended Ocean Butterflies lessons before. However they don't seem to have teacher specialized in teaching English songs.
