Making some Noise

SO I know, I know. I should really get all this stuff done a lot sooner. But hey, there’s only one of me and so many people to see.

At any rate, I was at the Noise Singapore exhibition (now on at Raffles City Shopping Centre, Level 3 atrium) to see Seah Weiwen, aka For This Cycle, who was performing three songs.

The reason? He’d just been presented with the Noise Singapore Prize in the Music category, with his song, Paper Feet. His prize? 5 big smackeroos. (That’s $5,000 in case you didn’t get it.)

And yes, the soft-spoken singer songwriter was happy to win the prize. “I was very surprised that I won. I really didn’t expect to win. I’m grateful that I got this opportunity and thankful to Noise for helping build the local art scene,” he said.

Weiwen is going to use part of that money to do his full-length album, which he hoped could be out later this year. Just what can we expect? “We have been working on pop rock stuff, and there’s one song that’s relatively heavy – compared to the rest of my stuff, that is. I feel I’ve grown a lot as a songwriter. It’s really going to be different from my previous material.”

As for his aspirations, Weiwen said he hoped to do a regional tour once he finishes school in June. “But then there’s NS. So I’m just taking things as they come.”

And no, you probably won’t be seeing him acting on TV (like what he did in The Band) any time soon. “I do appreciate TV but music is where my heart is. To be honest, I’m not a very good actor!”
Weiwen will perform at the Noise showcase at Esplanade Outdoor Theatrelove on Mar 6. For more info, visithttp://www.noisesingapore.com

Another winner was duo In Finite Flight. A call was put out to get songs that embodied the celebratory spirit of Youth Olympic Games 2010, and their song We Will Make It, took the top prize in the music category.

For those who don’t know, In Finite Flight is made up of Sarah and Amos, and grew from the ashes of Eternal Loop, a JC band that the two were playing in. “We met at Anderson Jr College and wrote a couple of songs. After JC people went to the army or overseas and we filtered down into an acoustic band. So that’s where we are today,” said Amos.

Their winning entry was actually written during their time in JC. “This song was actually written for our JC orientation,” said Sarah. “So we decided to re-record it and just give it a shot. Little did we know we’d be here today.”

Right now, their plans are to take things as they come. Sarah will be finishing her studies at NUS, but Amos is only in his first year. “We take world domination song by songs. The world is very big we are just two people. So we’ll see what happens,” said Sarah.
