Mac G5 processor is out!

They claim that this is the fastest home computer available. Quote from their website:

"The dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 with Logic Platnum 6.1 can play 115 tracks, compared with a maximum of 35 tracks on the Dell Dimension 8300 and 81 tracks on the Dell Precision 650 each with Cubase SX 1.051. More impressively, the 1.6GHz single-processor Power Mac G5 played 50 percent more tracks than the 3GHz Pentium 4-based system."

Sounds really impressive. Price is not too impressive at US$2000. Let´s see if the upcoming Pentium 5 and Athlon64 can beat the speed.

Hmmm, I always thought that the number of tracks played back was more dependent on the speed of the hard drive than the processor speed.

Perhaps a more meaningful comparison would have been the maximum number of a certain software plugin that can be opened and used.

You´re right, hard-drive speed is the bottle-neck. Perhaps they optimised it for Logic 6.1 (or vice versa) which Apple now owns. They compared it with PCs running Cubase and not Logic. Maybe that´s the catch.

But 115 tracks is pretty impressive!

Apple seemed to have corrected their site. It is not 115 tracks but 115 plug-ins. Now that´s more possible.

well this just adds to my indecision which to buy! Then there´s the question of notebook or desktop. Will be travelling a lot and the wife wont let me access the computer while Im at home so i think i just answered my own question. Notebook it is. With a little usb controller keyboard. Now... which platform?

I still feel that a computer dedicated to DAW is the most stable.

Most people complain that a PC is unstable compared to a MAC probably because the PC is
1) Loaded with "friendly" software
2) Loaded with games
3) Bloated with unnecessary programs (eg most of the stuff that a Creative Soundcard loads on installation is useless).
4) Installed with a gaming soundcard which increases the risk of an interrupt conflict
5) Connected to the internet, increasing the risk of a virus attack (my old Echo driver was infected with the famous Cih virus and every time I started an audio program, it hung).
