Looking for an electric guitar

I've been playing the acoustic guitar for about 3 years and i think its high time to switch to an electric for some grunge. after tabulating all my hongpao money, i realise my budget is within $400.

i was considering the Yamaha Pacifica 112J.

any suggestions?

U might wanna consider the OLP MM1 guitar. Its a double humbuckered guitar with just a volume control. The overdriven tone is very good. Great for rock, blues and even jazz..hehe...price is , i think, slightly lower than a Yamaha Pac 112...

If u want, I can sell mine to u cos I need cash urgently. I hate to let it go but got no choice... :(

first of all it depends whether you want ur instrument to be brand new or used. for me personally i would want my guitars to be brand new. i dont mind getting a cheaper model or saving up for it

as for the pac112, i would say its almost the perfect starters guitar. standard strat shape, good construction, good playability, basically very good value for money. if you plan on practicing a lot it would be a good guitar. My first was a yamaha pac 312 and still have it with me

I too started playing the acoustic for about 3 yrs before i decided to make the switch, a la Bob Dylan (heh, ok ok... before you start flaming me, lemme justify that i can't compare to Bob Dylan in any way, except that i started on acoustic too) :)

Anyway, my first electric was a strat-style vantage which i got 2nd hand for about 100 including a vantage 15w amp. The strat style is a good choice for beginners cos it balances well on the lap, and the double-cut away shape is comfortable too.

I'd stay away from the OLP mentioned above if i were you, no tone control leaves you with little room for tonal versatility. An OLP is great for certain kinds of music, but maybe not so flexible for a beginner. But that's just my opinion, no offence meant.

First Electric Guitar

Hi,

If your total budget is $400 incl amp, I think there are some guitar packages which you can get.

First up would be the Beheringer Package. Its selling for $230 flat at most places. Advantage would be the amp which will provide you with a lot of modelling sounds but the guitar is really really crappy.

You can check out places like, Guitar Workshop for second hand package deals as well.

Other shops which give a good package deal would be Davis Guitar and Luthermusic.

Swee Lee and Yamaha would the last on my list cus' they're packages are not really value for money.

the thing with bundled deals is that not both items (guitar & amp) are good, chances are, one would be fantastic (like the Behringer amp) & the other quite crappy...

i'd personally recommend the Squier Std Fat Srat as a very good beginner guitar but coupling an amp with that would exceed your $400 limit...

the Squiers since Y2K are plague-free... fit & finish are immaculate, only the tone needs to be fine tuned, & that's personal preference altogether. i'm refering to the Std models of course, the Affinity series could have been better...

not many are aware of the revision WEF Y2K, nobody bothers to spread the word anyway because Squier has always been 'down there'...

personaly...i dun like most of those packages...i think u shld really find what type of music u playin..den chose the type of guitar and amp that suits u...

Ha, plague-free, I like that. I have never enjoyed the feel or sound any squier. I much prefer the cheap ibanezs but to each his own.

of course, i'm an Ibanez fan too...

i used to really HATE all fenders & squiers, it got intoxincating at one time, the sheer sight of any fender/ squier makes my blood boil- but that was yesterday...

after Leo Fender passed away, i managed to get hold of some fender literature & got to know the philosophy behind the creations. kinda ironic, fender had to die to make me 'repent' of sorts... squiers made me wanna puke because they were riding on the Fender tag to get by- it stopped in Y2K when the management decided that it would continue to reflect fender's genious for the budget wary players in addition to embarking on their own journey from then on. the reason why we see variations of Squiers instead if just the usual strat/ tele/ J/ P-bass copies which were overdone IMO... unlike the Squiers of yerteryears, the current generation of instruments have evident quality in them, a far cry from some of the ply-wood models the had pre-Y2K...

I'm still quite jaded in terms of fender because of the damn CBS era. But some of the new Jap. Strats are so nice, especially the double fat floyd rose, with duncans *drools*.

sheeesh!! the CBS era makes me boil too... luckily some very guitar oriented people took over, otherwise, Fenders would be 'down there' as well... i can't bring myself to like any '70s era Fenders, except for the re-issues... i hear you on the Jap Fenders, they are a constant threat to the US counterparts. i think everyone who had tried the Jap units would vouch for the sheer quality & tone... yummy.

It's a shame the same sort of thing didn't happen to krammer, in one year biggest and one of the best guitar companies to bankrupt. Man I miss the pure shredy/metal tone, o well we still have Jackson.

I find the 112 is a good beginner's guitar, no kidding. I actually downgrade to a 112 for fun. Time was taken to properly setup for me before I left the shop.

Except that it does cost more than an average beginner one.
