Try doing some old school stuff, Cream,Hendrix ( Little Wing ). CHeck out Mark Knopfler as well.

Practise hard, take it easy.

Come on TS, we are only joking. Sorry if I was offensive.

It is important to learn the necessary techniques. But playing what you want is always good too.

I started playing hard stuff. My first song was Master of Puppets by Metallica. From that song only, I learnt many things. Playing with distortion and clean. Playing power chords, soloing, improvising. Picking open chords. From power chords, I wanted to know what they are, and why are they so commonly used. Then I found out power chords are part of E and A from CAGED system. From CAGED, I learnt what makes a chord. Like a power chord is made out of the root and the fifth.

It's more of a step by step. I started with a difficult song. Everybody has his/her own steps to learning. My steps are rather erm..weird, but I found out it was common. My friends started the same way too. They play their favourite songs then go "oooh this is a power chord. But what is it? Oohhh this solo, why like hear before the pattern? Is the pattern a common thing? Ohh the pattern is called a scale....So what are scales? Why are there scales?" So on and so forth.

So go on. Play what you want.

But if you want systematic learn, there are some sites like www.justinguitar.com.

no lah LOL unknown, you don't sound offensive.

i've got another question. does the tone come from the amp/pups or comes from the hand?

can do what to get a good tone easily(like cheating)

from classical/acoustic(before ppl quote me again. so this is the correct one?)
the tone is actually coming from the strike and where the player strikes.

for electric I usually strike around my neck pups.

and Mark Knopfler doesn't use a pick. hmmm

lol... I was forced to learn that song as my first metal song after playing green day stuff for about 2 months... some idiotic friends of mine signed me up for my school music competition for it without my consent... the solo really worked me up i must say, when i just started, my fingers cramped before the first 10 seconds of kirk's solo lol. Eventually i got the song laid down, a week before they canceled the competition due to H1N1 lol

^Hey bro, at least the incident has gotten you to learn that song, no? Haha. If not for the incident, would you really learn the song by heart? Maaaayyybeeee.... For me, my sister so called intro-ed me to the song. The computer was in my room and my sister would play the song loud in the morning. It was like a daily alarm clock. LOL. So yeah tried to learn it on an acoustic.

PS: Till now, I never nailed that song. Haha.

I've nailed the song on electric (except james' solo) though I'm still working on the stamina to downpick the whole song lol. I guess you're right, without those 2 annoying buggers, I'd probably be playing pop rock instead of thrash metal right now haha.

Kirk's solo took me 3 months to nail completely (of which, two were spent speeding my fingers up to the task and training dexterity)

The riff took 2 weeks normally... and so far a month to downpick... I only tried to downpick it a month ago lol.

Wait, you nailed Kirk's solo but not James? Mine is otherwise. Haha! Yeah I used to be able to downpick the whole song. But lazy me now, can't finish the song even if alternate pick. Haha.

I haven't tried James' solo yet, kinda lazy lol :P
I can downpick the whole song, just that for the intro I'm either a tad slower than the original speed, or my right forearm cramps on me xD
