lessons?

took lessons for about an year and a half, developed a decent consistency and variations of rock and funk grooves. didn't own a drumset while i was still takin' lessons so little practice made me an average pop rock drummer. got a drumset now so catchin' up on the real drumming aspects finally.

i'll say lessons are good, since you learn correct technique fast, with self-taught stuff, you might pick up a bad habit? i watch instructional videos over n over again few times to make sure i'll be practicin the right technique.. but drum lessons in sg expensive la, at least 2 years back ^^

sometimes i think that taking lesson is good....

i've been playing for nearly 12 years but i'm self taught
then again, i feel i still sucks at playing the drums.. dats why i think taking lessons is good...

I've been taking lesson 1 year liao - practicing almost 5 times a week - I ask myself also the same question - How Long More TO GO Har ? - I Know the answer - A FEW MORE YEARS lah..........not easy

ever since i invested in a 'not cheap' practice pad i have been motivated to try to practice at least 15mins every night. (rudiments)

only get to use my kit if i come home straight from work. Which is like twice a week if im lucky, else theres only weekends. (grooves)

this is my third month with alvin and i think i have improved alot in those 3 months as compared to the one year of lessons i have taken elsewhere.

Lessons + Practice = no wasting of time.

Of course there are days where i go "oh $#% it lah so difficult"...

I've been basically self taught, other then the 3 months of lessons I had with Gordon Jensen abt 10 years ago....

It's important to learn from a teacher when you just pick up the instrument, if not you will be picking up a lot of bad habits a long the way. Having a teacher doesn't mean that you learn faster. If you don't put in the effort to practice and also practice the correct things, then it is a waste of your time and money in learning from a teacher.

I would love to take lessons again if only I can find the time to practice. If not I find that it's a total waste of time if you don't practice the materials that the teacher pass to you.

cheers.....

Yeah you are absolutely correct.

You know something.....My Instructor taught me a Technique (to play faster - and have a more open sound - drums resonate better)...less than 2 months ago since I started lesson. Also play slow (40 speed) using a Metronome...I had never done this before in my past 1 year of lessons last time from other Instructor.....So I do it - and I practice everyday.

In less than 2 months - My Singles, Double, Paraddidles and Flam are faster and cleaner now....it's true (but I really practice everynight for 3 hours on my Rudiments)....This week onwards I started to do less eg only 1 hour because I want to practice my Groove (so I spend an hour or 2 on this area)...

Now - I went to Soft Monthly Meetup recently, Bliss taught me how to do Basic Double-Pedal Exercises (because everyone is doing double-pedal there) - I really never learn double-pedal before...I automatically switch on my Metronome to 40 speed started practicing it on Sunday (wah quite long - 3 hours like that)...Yesterday _ I do it for 1 hour and I could do it very cleanly at 100 speed...110 speed I got a little problem when I roll around the kit with double-pedal together...but It's good it's clean....all I am trying to say here is - Techniques and Methods taught to me by my teacher was applied on something new I learn (automatically by myself )and it works.

SO I say lessons is important - it's so true we need to know how to practice correctly...initially I tell myself - "Wah 40 speed - so funny I neber play/practice so slow before ever - make myself feel older when playing (the fact I'm really old liao) ..but...there is a reason behind - I nail my timming well from here and as I play faster - Hey Brother I groove man !...Kekekeke

I LOVE LESSONS !

PS: - Ooops I forgot to mention something here - VERY IMPORTANT - My Instructor taught me how to seat properly - so I am well balance - that's why I can play the Double-Bass Drum well with...my LEGS TECHNIQUES also here...Kekekeke  Next meetup I play the double-pedal- hope thay dont fall off the chair when they see me doing it - Hahahaha bery fast one hor and solid somemore....I am Awesome.eeeeeeeeeeeee

a drum teacher would be a shortcut for anyone who wants to play well as he/she will provide u with a general direction to go. u learn faster that way too.
but yet again, theres no shortcut to anything, therefore hardwork and dedication must still exist for anyone to become a good drummer.

I has actually been self-learning for 2+ years before my mum allowed me to take lessons formally this year...I must say throughout these 3 months of lessons, I actually learnt a lot of stuff I'd never seen in that 2+ years.
