Les Paul Ebony

The Standard Les Paul has is heavier, providing more natural sustain. It's also got 4 knobs, 2 knobs (1 volume, 1 tone) for each pickup. It also sounds better compared to the Special II model, which is lighter, and has only 2 knobs. I am not too sure on this, but i think their necks are bolt-on. But hey you're comparing a $1k guitar and a $300 guitar. There's obviously a big gulf there.

Try playing both and see which you prefer.

You can also get a EPI Les Paul Custom 2nd hand, but a LP Standard would be good enough. ~$400 for a standard 2nd hand, then you can get some effects or pedals or a better Amp

You can look into other types of LPs like Edwards and Tokai too

Les Paul Special uses basswood so get the Standard or Custom.Best choice with that kind of money.

And yeah, confirmed Les Paul Special II has a bolt-on neck, according to the Epiphone site. Couldn't expect much for $300, but i'm kinda positive there has to be something good in the Special model. I dunno. 8)

Agreed. Might as well get a secondhand Burny or Orville, they're definitely better than the standard range Epiphones. The last I heard, someone's Epiphone LP Classic literally broke at the neckjoint. If Epiphone, the very lowest you should get is the Korean made standard. I've tried those before and compared it with a Gibson LP standard, they're not far apart.

Yup! Within that budget of yours, its wise to get a 2nd hand japan made guitars like: Edwards, tokai, greco, orville and burny. Those are no doubt have much superior spec in terms of tonewoods, electronics, hardware, QC, fretswork are fantastic!! Try them before deciding to buy.:)

+1 to above!

Get something other than an epiphone if you want a LP. Unless you're talking about those vintage japanese models :) But of course, that means more money.

The les paul special 2 was my first guitar, bought it as a starter pack from sweelee. The only good thing about it was that it didn't hurt when I scratched it!
