Learning about Singlish made my day...

I was at work, doing some research on Singapore statistics, when I chanced upon this page on Wikipedia regarding Singlish...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singlish

I was amazed when I saw how detailed it was... Some people really took great effort to compile so much information about Singlish man...

Then as I read on, it happened...

i almost died laughing... or rather, I almost died trying to suppress my laughter, and got a dirty glare from my boss...

My favourite part was the explanation of the word "kena"... :

Quote: "It is similar in meaning to passive markers in Chinese, such as Hokkien "tio" or Mandarin 被 bèi..."

"kena arrow: be assigned an undesirable task"

"kena ban/silence: one of the newer uses of kena, it means to be banned/silenced in a computer game."

"kena sai: literally "hit by shit"; be harmed by an unpleasant event or object"

Singlish... you've gotta love it... don't pray pray...

P.S. definitely NOT trying to start a "singlish vs. stnd english" debate here. Let's just take a step back, relax, and have a good laugh while appreciating Singlish, the language which lets us know we're home. Those who have lived overseas for extended periods will know what I mean. When you're taking the subway in Paris and you hear the words "wah lao, damn crowded man... ", you've found a friend.

The standard powerful "Three word" questions:

See doctor got? - Check to see if the doctor has whatever you're looking for
See got doctor? - Check to see if the doctor is around
Got doctor see? - Check to see if a doctor is on schedule
Got see doctor? - Have you seen the doctor?
Doctor got see? - Did you show / tell the doctor what's wrong?
Doctor see got? - When the doctor check, did he spot whatever you were complaining about?
