Lead Guitaring

you should learn some scales first so as to increase ur finger's dexterity. Learning the scales should be a priority as this lets u know what u are playing and organise ur playing. It is also the first step in the learning the art of improvising.

And as u learn scales u can incorportate the learning of different phrasings such as bends, hammer ons, pull offs, vibrato, slides and etc. Phrasing is very important, its the phrasing that differentiates the pros from the amatuers.

Start with some simple solos first, as they are more achievable in a shorter period, and thus u will feel more rewarded, if u start with something that is too difficult, u may get intimidated and give up in frustration.

Tabs are useful, but always know what key or scale u are playing in, rather than jus playing the tabs, cos u will learn more this way as u relate ur playing.

start with holding the pick, then coordination. it takes time, about a year? to build up ur fingers in coordination, learning techniques and speed

dude he is just starting how u expect him to improvise? learn scales first mah...

no wait, chords first, then licks and riffs(easy), then scales

listen to alot of diffirent genre of music - each style has it's own unique phrasing....

play along wit the cds...tabs & all are fine but sometymes playing along with the recordings 8) helps increase your "feel"

IMHO

if im not wrong there was this thread abt backing tracks. this other forum. gotta register. then can search thru the whole collection n download.

edit: ah already stated

If ur into pentatonics, try improvising on pearl jam - alive the backing track.
You can try Pink floyd - comfortably numb too. These are quite easy to improvise on. Of course you have to listen hard and get an idea of the original song 1st.

Alternatively you can try the jam track section.

How exactly do i pick up lead? Where to start? other than juz playing tabs? Show me the light! haha =)

he hasnt started learning yet! so i recommend scales. learn pentatonic, then major minor scales

he was just asking for recommendations without stating his proficiency so... well i just told him some of my favourite tracks.

But well beginners should start off with improvising on pentatonics based tracks and something slow tempo.

i think some1 might need to explain to him/her the meaning of pentatonic too. coz some1 who progresses from just a rhythm player sometimes have no idea of these unique guitar terms we often use in our daily lives like just another simple word. i guess what this person wants is a whole new introduction to how to solo n all. in-depth explanation. im no expert teacher myself so all u pros out there help this user out.
