Just wondering, I'm a long time fan of the ProCo Rat, having used both the OD07DP and LM308 versions extensively. I love the sound of the Rat, that raw and aggressive character, with just the right amount of compression.
Push it with an OD like the TS or SD-1 and wham your lead lines sound fat and still cut through. Problem with a Rat? Noise floor. It's always there, be it you use silver mica capacitors, isolated PSUs, quality cables, it will always be there.

At times I GAS for a good muff (when I had one, I barely touched it, maybe once a month) and I came across this pedal; half Rat, half Muff.

Digging out old threads (I remember this pedal and the Crunchbox were popular around the same), I've got some questions.

Does this pedal use the LM308 chip?
How different is the Rutt from the Rutt 2? (Rutt 1 looks like a Death by Audio pedal while Rutt 2 looks like a CMATmods)
Anywhere I can get this pedal? I don't think it is being made any longer so if anyone has this pedal lying around somewhere I'd love to take it off your hands!

I used to have the rutt v1, but already sold off long while back.

Lucky my photo dumping ground online have one of the innard pic taken from an ebay auction which the maker was selling at that time i think. Other than the lm308, theres another transistor in the bottom as well. If i remember corretly, the pcb of the pedal has a general guitar gadget or name of another famous diy site. The circuit might not be as original from the maker, but done with the info thats circulating online based on variants of the rat circuit.

Hi i have 3 rutts cos i love the tones a great deal and bought additional to keep. It gets into the smooth Santana lead tone easily. I might sell 1. Let me know if you are keen.

I had the Rutt v1 I think. Tin can ic chip - just smoother and sweeter than the more modern chip. Might not cut as well though.

Anyway, other than the coveted chip, the other components were cheap stuff. It would be good to replace the jacks with better quality ones.

If you like the Rutt's tone, go check out the Maxz High Gain Monster... I think G77 carries some. Has a similar compression/feel + tonal qualities.

Ok I do have a problem with distortion pedals, or generally hard clipping pedals. I bond with overdrives and fuzzes well, but when it comes to distortion pedals, I find myself getting tired of it really quick. Sometimes it blows me away for a moment, and then it disappears. In fact the only distortion pedal I've ever liked is the Rat; which can be set to an overdriven setting (Dist-9, Filter-2.30) or fuzz (Dist>12).

Either ways the only distortions I've ever liked is capable of both OD and fuzz (Rat, Mudhoney). Hence I'm quite skeptical on the MaxZ HGM. It might not necessarily be my cup of tea. Also LM308 + JCR4558D pedals work like heaven in unison!

Rats are cool. Very cool. Probably because they sit in a sort of fuzz-dist but more dist than fuzz, unlike the Big Muffs. The harmonics are just more... "excited"? Messy? Than many dist boxes.

The HGM has a similar vibe - a good grind going on in the harmonics. There's also a nice singing sustain. The distortion characteristic is also sort of loose-ish so while it still works for old school metal, it's not tight enough for chug/djent - which I think you don't want.

I think you can try them out - line the HGM up with the Rat side by side.

Dude different graphics. The weird symbols like a Death By Audio pedal is v1, the ruby red with cursive fonts like a CMATmods pedal is a v2.
