“… Ingram sticks to the song at hand. He applied note-stretching filigree judiciously, not needing histrionics to impress with a superb range that went from mellifluous cooing on high notes... to firm and manly chest-tones...” – Los Angeles Times

Most of us know him for his smooth-as-butter croon on 80s smash hit pop-soul love ballads such as Just Once, I Don’t Have the Heart, How Do You Keep the Music Playing and Baby, Come to Me (with Patti Austin), Somewhere Out There (with Linda Ronstadt) and the tightly grooving Yah Mo B There (with Michael McDonald). But most of us don’t know three-time Grammy winner James Ingram began his musical career as a self-taught multi-instrumentalist with the Revelation Funk band and then as a sought-after sessionist for artists such as Grover Washington Jr., Shalmar, and Ray Charles.

It was only when he cut a demo of Just Once in 1980 for Quincy Jones and so impressed the legendary music man with not only the song but his singing that Quincy invited him to sing both Just Once and One Hundred Ways on his album The Dude that James Ingram shot to fame, winning the award for best R&B vocal performance at that year’s Grammy Awards.

His follow-up hit debut album It’s Your Night ended up topping pop, soul and adult contemporary charts. Since then, James has created all sorts of music from pop-soul hits to film scores as songwriter, vocalist and producer, and worked with some of the biggest names in pop and soul including Patti Austin, Linda Ronstadt, Barry White, El Debarge, Dolly Parton, Peabo Bryson, Michael McDonald, Brian McKnight, Natalie Cole, Anita Baker, Angie Stone, Roberta Flack and Michael Jackson (for whom he co-wrote P.Y.T. from Thriller). Along the way, James has garnered three Grammy awards, 15 Grammy nominations and gold records, and is well-loved internationally for his full, rich tenor and quiet, soulful ways with song.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the most devastating natural disaster in the USA, James wanted to make a record that could help in some way. The result was Stand (In the Light) , a CD of inspirational songs, released in January 2009. Featuring new works and his 1983 Grammy-winning collaborative hit with Michael McDonald, Yah Mo Be There, from his first album, It’s Your Night, Stand (In the Light) sees the soul man returning to his roots in the church with a distinct gospel feel and lyrics for the soul.
