Hi guys, I've stopped playing the guitar for about 2 to 3 years now.

My passion for it is back and I really think I should learn everything right from the basics as I've forgotten almost everything!

Can the pros here advise me on how I should start? Should I go with acoustics and learn strumming, theory etc. before heading to the electric guitar?

Also, please recommend me teachers or schools which I can take lessons from. Would appreciate all help!

Edwin

although i wouldnt call myself a pro but in my opinion learning the basics online would be great.. i mean you can get lots of information/vids on youtube regarding the basic stuff so yea i feel that its better to save out on the cost, and besides acoustic or electric it's ur pref on which to start on, alotta ppl tend to think that electric is harder but its really the matter of interest

i agree with imkeith about the 'starting with electric or acoustic first' issue.
Its really a matter of preference. I know guitarists that dont play the acoustic at all and vice versa.
When it comes to learning from scratch again, either will suffice.
And yes, online has alot of material for learning. Basically learn from online sites and streaming vids, if you get stuck somewhere or dont understand something, u could seek out some help from ur friends or the forum. Much more cost effective this way

Some people require teachers that they can ask questions to and all. Thus the need for teachers... I'd recommend my ex-teacher, but seeing he went to Hong Kong... There are numerous music schools around. You can always go in to one and speak to one of the instructors.
The acoustic/electric part... Well, for one, acoustic strings are definitely harder to fret than electric ones. That means your finger hardens faster though.

Thanks guys! I guess I'll start with the acoustic guitar first. Any advice on what decent acoustic guitar I should get? Budget wise less than $500.

hmm you're gna get alot of recommendation ranging from takamine to taylor to God knows what other brand but i think heading down to a store and testing the guitar out yourself and to see if u like the sound/feel of the guitar and of course the price is much more an important factor then getting people's opinion.
ok yes but still i've actually got a recommendation, well you can try the jack & danny acoustic guitars idk but personally i find that it's a real comfortable guitar which sounds great too and judging from your budget it shouldnt be a problem to get quite a decent acoustic :)

hmmm regarding the teacher part, i think u can learn quite a bit from this online teacher. his lessons are pay as u wish. go youtube and search for this dood named justin sandercoe. some ppl on this forum including myself have benefitted from his easy to understand teaching methods. :)

as for starting, i recommend u start out on what u wish to play at the end. ie. if u wanna be an acoustic player then start on acoustic :)

500 should be enough to get a decent one mine costs 300. You should go down to the shop and try instead of getting recommendations, because you must like the tone/timbre/feel before getting it for yourself.

I feel that whether you start on electric or acoustic or even classical, it doesn't matter, bcos they are all guitars. It depends on what you'd like to play in the future. Basics can be learnt on any guitar, but if you plan to go into electric later i'd suggest you get one straightaway, its a lot more playable than an acoustic.
