Is Wearing Gloves to Drum - Bad or Good ?

I have read in many Forums especially DrummerWorld - Manyy of the Drummers says - "Don't Wear Gloves To Drum - It's A Bad Habit"...... My ex-Instructor also tells me "Don't Use Gloves to Drum"........

What is the reason for that if so many drummers are opposed to Using Gloves To Drum ?.

PS: - But at Thomas Lang Clinic - I saw Thomas wearing a Glove at his Right-Hand when he drum and he drum well.

So - my question is - Is there anything wrong with wearing gloves, but why are there so many who opposed to drumming wearing gloves...

Kindly give me some feedback.

Actually I really see no harm in wearing gloves...People who have sweaty palms usually wear gloves, no?

I think the reason why you were told not to wear gloves is to avoid being too dependent on them...

I think it makes sense if you play a lot (like T.Lang who goes on worldwide clinics, probably plays more than 6 hours a day?) and want to prevent blisters. Or maybe he ALREADY has blisters.

I think the question is kinda like - Should you wear a glove to play pool/billiard? Some guys swear by it, some guys swear at it.

if you wear certain stuff and cannot play properly, pls dont wear it!

this advice is always given by teachers to drummers starting out or still not got a good fundamental.

but it eventually gets to a point, you can do pretty much anything you want, as long as you can play properly and it doesn't affect you.

i think thomas lang's gloves is more of a personal style or aesthetic choice. zoro, he wears hats and some funny costumes when he plays.

some drummers wear bondage pants (with straps linking each trouser to the other) even though there's a chance it gets caught in a stand, drum throne etc.

cheers

Well perhaps a concern for many instructors is that for students just starting out, wearing gloves might hinder development of proper technique.

For example, if the student gripping sticks too tight or in an improper way that would cause blisters on hands, wearing gloves would mask the effect as it would prevent the blisters, and hence the student may carry on using improper technique which may would handicap them in the long run. Of course, with an attentive instructor, such problems can be prevented.

However, of course there are no hard and fast rules. One man's bread may be another man's poison. I think at the end of the day, its up to one's personal preference. For example, even though Jimmy Lee doesnt use gloves, he wraps up the base of his sticks with stickwrap that is supposed to help with better grip. Again, there are purists who would insist that one ought to play with sticks the way they are originally made and that we shouldnt use stick wrap.

Personally, i have sweaty palms, but I don't use gloves or stickwrap, simply because my hands are trained to cope with the extra slipperiness. Also I don't want to have the burden of putting on gloves whenever I whack at my practise pad! :D

So i guess it boils down to personal preference. If it works for you, do it.

Ok tell you all lah.

Last time when I just started out Drumming - I went to Yamaha and saw the Zildjian Glove (not cheap ley)....cause I think wah stylo-malo wear a glove....at that time I was avery active in DrummerWorld Forum new to drumming (but you know lah - when new everything also buy one)......posted this same question.

To my surprise, alomost 49 out of 50 would say - Using Gloves is a Bad Habit (I guess because we dont see all those Professional using Gloves) ....

Then some people says - to prevent Blisters...then many came out and say - Having Blister is because of Bad/Wrong Techniques used...so dont use Glove correct the techniques........

So till today my gloves only wear 2 times - I dont usually sweat my palms when I play drums only when I do very tough stuffs - Hahahaha sound so funny but true dunno is it because of pressure lah...hahaha.

But seriously even if it's ok to wear glove to drum - I will not at present - wait people see "Wah so stylo Milo this drummer" but then when I play "Like Shit like that"...people laugh until pein-san hahahaha..

But I will wear the glove - If I need to strangle someone here...hahahaha

who gives a crap what people say, just do whatever you're comfortable with. if wearing gloves help, then good. if not, ditch it.

i wear gloves, only when im jamming. cause i got sweaty palms.

but i dont put it on when im practising rudiments at home.

its not about style, its about protection. nobody said durian sellers wearing gloves very stylo...

I would say no to gloves though...

Blistering due to prolonged playing can be due to a technical fault, rather than a must happen thing... Just my 2 cents worthed. :)

i used to go for constant jamming and gigs..

coz of that, Had lotsa blisters. at least one blister per index and middle finger

and another blister at the bottom of the little finger.

but the shitiest blister i ever had was the one ON the thumb !

thats where gloves came in handy for me, ill have it on standby always.

when i where gloves, its usually becauze ive got 3 to 4 blisters on more..

if its just 1 or 2 id rather feel the pain.. makes me love drumming more..

Jiv.

i used to get blisters on the base of my pinkie, the middle section of my index finger, around tip of the thumb.

as time goes by, it disappeared. now i don't get blisters anymore no matter how long i drum. i take that as a good sign (I hope!)

Yeah, the skin thickens..

i also realise sometimes if i go crazy while playing really hard rock, i might wet my hair...

Once i poured a bottle of water down my hair and while playing the grip got slippery.. it was damn scarry.. i didnt wanna let my stick fly off..

so its a gd idea,

If u think ur gonna go crazy and gonna get ur hair wet or wat,

Use Gloves, It Will REALLY help..

waaarrrraaaauuuu... talking abt hands la.. Hands With DrumSticks, u noe RD.. the zildjians, promarks, vicFirths, Vaters,,
