I played guitar, both acoustic and electric, for like 2-3 years. But not so much of a taught one. I took up courses, but i drop after the 2nd module =P And what i play on electric guitar, its pretty much self-taught (and i still do play sucky). And I'm so tempted to start on bass because I've seen alot of forums and new bands want bassist, cus they have got guitarists already. (just like high demand but low supply for bassist). I don't really want to take up courses, but i know bass would be pretty hard without a guide.. help me out here? *and i dont have a bass guitar(package probably) yet =P, help on that would be greatly appreciated too* AND, i want to do this not just because i want to join a band or create one as a bassist in it, i do this because i love music and want to spread the love!

and my budget for a bass package is around $250 (i have already zoom down to sx package or samick one, based on what i read from other forums here)

its never too late dude! its always a good thing wanting to learn a new instrument... by the way, i started on guitar before i played bass too, hehe... so i say go for it.... =)
