interested in learning bass

I just received a bass a few days ago, and actually, I know nuts about the instrument but I'm really very interested in learning how to play it. I'm planning to learn how to play it by myself but I'm not sure how or where I should start from. I've done a few researches online but I couldn't understand most of it. Is anyone willing to help me out? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :(

hmm.. u can try sites like activebass.com.. pick a few songs u like, and spend sometime on it.. take it slow and observe people playing helps too. dun worry, i'm a noob too.. that's how i started, at least =D

thanks zhifa, i'll spend my time reading through those lessons, even though i doubt i'll understand most of it.
anyway, how do you tune a bass? how can you know which one sounds correct then? also, is it true that you have to tune the bass for every different song? thanks in advance. :oops:

Bass is tuned in E, A, D, G, from the thickest string to the thinnest string respectively.

There will be simple resources telling you how to tune basses and simple scales.

The bass doesn't have to be tuned for every song either, unless the song is in a different tuning, or your bass goes out of tune easily.

yup, jus follow wad rentabass said :) if u dunno how the notes sounds like u can always go to some online site that provide free online tuner, for example you can try this:

http://www.8notes.com/school/lessons/guitar/guitar_tuning/default2.asp

u can follow the last 4 strings tuning of a standard guitar, namely what rentabass mentioned. dun worry i cant decipher notes that well too..

again as mentioned by rentabass, u do not have to tune for every song u play, u jus have to know where the notes are located. Some understanding of the notes structure will help.. eg in C:

C - C# - D - D# - E - F - G - G# - A - A# - B - C --> 1 octave

its quite abit to type here and as i have mentioned, i'm still a noob.. lol.. i hope some pros will help u out here... have fun!

Internet really have alot of stuffs... take ur time and decipher them

=D

get a teacher for yourself dude...thats the easiest way,its important to know that you start bass with a correct method/way,otherwise someday later,it'll be hard on you to improve,unless you're gifted la =)

if you really dont wish to get a teacher ( or God forbid cant ) , get the Hal Leonard Bass Method Books 1 -3 . They retail at Kinokuniya for SGD 27 ++. And yes! Another bassist among the (thin) ranks of lowendsouls in Singapore.

cool, ima go get me those books to learn something in between my lessons. where's kinokuniya?
