Importing guitars

I've been thinking of getting a Taylor from the states as I'm going there at the end of the year (not to mention that the price is cheaper). But I just talked to one of the salesperson at Sinamex and he said that my guitar will be damaged due to the humidity here in Singapore before I can even do anything.

He said that Taylor has taught them how to help the guitar adjust to the humidity level here in Singapore so apparently only Sinamex does that for their guitars and buying it from them is the best bet of not spoiling my guitar. So I'm a little skeptical as to whether what he says is true as my friend bought a Martin from City Music last year and it's still sounding great. Some advice would be great!!! :)

Sounds like the kind of the usual sales talk I hear always from guitar shops. Which is why a proper setup would solve that problem.

Thank god I came to this forum to ask. So if I'm getting in from the states I'll just request a setup from them? Or set it up when I'm back in SG?

Bring the guitar back to SG, find a reputable tech/shop and do a setup here.

Of course when buying the guitar there, you gotta do your checks first. Setups can only make a good guitar play better :)

Thanks for the advice man :) What do I have to check when buying a guitar? I'm kinda blur when it comes to these type of things.

Unbelievable!!

Good decision asking around here, brother.

Good luck!

I guess you can start off with physically checking the guitars for construction defects maybe? Bad construction on the bindings if any, poorly dressed frets (sharp fret ends?), cracks, warped neck, etc.

But then you are buying a Taylor and I doubt they would ship out a terrible guitar.

And I guess if you try out the guitar and it just feels right in every way, your body is comfortable, your hands feel comfortable with the neck and your happy with the sound, then I guess that's it.

when you bring it over, either loosen, or cut the strings especially for the flight. and let the guitar settle in SG for a while first before sending for a setup, should be ok!
