Actually, it's more a benefit that the neck is not a single piece of wood. Laminated necks (length wise) are stronger. Wood tends to warp in a particular direction. So by laminating other pieces with different cuts, they counter each others tendency to warp.
E.g. u'll be hardpressed to find many decent basses with single piece necks, where strength is vital due to the high tension from the strings.
