is there a difference in the sound produced by a gibson (les paul) and an ibanez?
i was wondering, cos im into classic rock and stuff, would the sound produced by an ibanez make it sound 'metal-ish'?

it depends on what ibanez guitar u're talking about.

the stock pickups on the guitars of each brands differ a lot too... one other significant diff is the lp's shorter scale length compared to ibanez's rg's...

if u're talking about stock guitars, with no mods or what so ever, i'd say a gibson lp offers a vintage paf rock sound while a ibanez rg is capable of heavier sounds...

not really sure about other ibanez models but i think they're now all fitted with stock IBZ dimarzio pups so they should all have a more modern kinda sound...

Comparing Gibson and Ibanez, it depends on the range your looking at.......

If you're looking at the Les Paul, the closest Ibanez counterpart would be the SZ series for a set-neck, mahogany bodied guitar. But, the tone between these two guitars will still be different, though both would be quite suitable for classic rock or rock in general. I use my SZ for a variety of genres from classic rock, alt-rock to metal, it's more of how your shape your tone effects and amp-wise then the instrinsic tone of the guitar IMO

Other Ibanez models will have vastly different tones, which will depend on the type of wood used etc. RG models are usually made of basswood (there are exceptions), which is more neutral tonewise compared to the mahogany in LPs, so the inherent lower and midrange will probably not be as strong as that in an LP. Other models such as the S, SA, AX, Artist etc for Ibanez will also sound different in varying degrees.

Not true, Ibanez has a variety of pickups installed stock on their guitars. For the higher-end models, there are real Dimarzios (and in some models, EMGs) installed, there's also the Duncan-IBZ and Seymour Duncan-IBZ colloboration pickups, the Dimarzio-IBZ pickups as mentioned, as well as the Tru-Duo humbucker and AH/AHS seen in the SA series, the IBZ V series, the IBZ INF series, STD series in the Gio models and the Super series and ACH series humbuckers seen in a couple of other Ibanez guitars. All in all, Ibanez offers a large variety of stock humbuckers which meet different needs and genres. Though most likely discerning tone-purists would swap out the stock humbuckers

tone comparisons across brand names are definitely differentiated. tone even varies across different variation of the same brand name. if you wish to acquire a certain tone with a certain brand name, do let us know. we'll share the possibilities.
