Hey guys, I need some recommendations for a guitar amp. I'm looking for a small and cheap tube amp for practicing, does any one know of one? I play mainly rock and metal and I can't stand the sound of transistor distortion. Any pedal recommendations are also welcome..

small and cheap ah...kustom? thats the only small tube amp i know of. never personally tried it tho. heard of it only. think there's the laney one also...some LC15R issit? hmm...waitaminute, is that tube...?

Small and cheap plus good value, I can recommend the Roland Cube 30 amp with 4 built in effect and COSM modeling which gives you eight distinct guitar amp sounds to choose from. If u think tat is too big then u can get the Micro Cube. Very good review at harmony central. I got it at only $300 during Swee Lee sales. 8)

Better to get a good efx pedal instead and use the amp's clean channel. The difference between tube and trans for clean sound is not that discernable.

Except if you play clean only of light distortion, the tone will shine on a good tube amp.

For metal sound, I think there is not much difference on a practise grade amp, a trans amp is actually more suited for a metal sound. Due to it's reliability and price, the trans wins on this field.

these days, you get pedals with amp modelling, all you need is a clean channel to work out the tone you want on the efx.

I wish this was true, but I really can't stand transistor distortion, even with metal. I find transistor distortion very metallic (pun not intended) and really annoying. Sounds like a bloody square wave if you have heard one before. On tubes I find the distortion sounding rounder and more pleasant. By the way I'm talking about the more pleasant metal music like Iron Maiden and old school Metallica.

I'm curious though, the distortion from the 2 bands mentioned above are coming from the pre-amp stage only or both pre-amp and power amp? And also.. I consider 40-60w combos practice amps too so you guys can afford to be a little more generous when recommending me stuff :D

Kustom Tube 12A from luther.219 bucks. 12 watts though.

Have you heard it before? How does it sound? I tried a Marshall AVT at a jam studio before and it sounded ok, but it was very noisy, loud hiss and all. Probably not well maintained.

Any idea if the Mesa Nomad amps are selling in Singapore? It has nice features and I wonder how it sounds and how much it cost...

wait no more man... go grab a peavey 5150. it is too loud for room practise but the distortion you get from this amp is really amazing. im using the combo.. only thing about the 5150 combo is the clean channel... but then again... if you loved clean tone that much... get a fender twin man . and A/B the two amps...
i paid about 1.4k at swee lee..

another suggestion is the tech21 trademark 60. Very nice amp...quite expensive too...
its really quite tube-like.. warm distortions.. kudos to the GT2 inside.. unfortunately once you experience the gain on the 5150.. the gt2 is like a toy.. anyway..thats not the point..haha sorry...

mesa combo would be the ultimate... tried a dual rect and f30 i think at esden trading some time back... didnt manage to get a tone worth its price tag... as it was abit complicated.. "over engineered" .. but im confident if you get to tweak it properly it would be a monster as well.

laney lc15r is a small 15watt tube amp..i think excel doesnt have any in stock.. u might wanna call and check.. and luther also i think.. if im not mistaken price is $450.. might not do your metal chug stuff properly..but with a Ts-9 to push it ... it should be decent .

The 5150 is a little off my budget.. :( Where is excel? The laney sounds like something I may consider, but it's a little... expensive for a 15 watter. Then again it's a tube amp, but there's no channel switching..

Actually right now I have a 15w samick bass amp and a DOD FX100 pedal, and I don't like the tone when I switch the pedal on, but I like my amp's clean tone, with the pedal off. The batteries in the pedal also run low very often, and I'm beginning to get sick of changing them, that's why I thought of just getting a proper guitar amp with built in overdrive. I also thought of getting a better pedal and running it off a wallwart so I don't have to buy any more batteries. What do you guys think? My budget depends on whether my relatives are generous this CNY or not.

oh kay... in that case... peavey bandit. 1x12. its one of the most all round amps ive played... or a fender solid state.. personally i would go for 1x12 speakers.. they sound so much better.. then say 8 or 10 inch speakers.. remember to only pay money for something you are completely certain will last you awhile.. if not you most probably will just waste money.
