I need Amps, which ones to consider?

I recently ordered a Squier Fat Strat from USA, thus i didn't get an amp coz it would cost too much to ship over. Am fairly new to this whole guitar thing ... desperately need some suggestions on what else i might need to get it going. Amps are a must, however i do not know which brands are more reliable or suitable for my kind of music. I'm into rock and metal... so i'm not sure if it matters but i would appreciate some help here! :D

get messa boogie rectifier

To whom it may concern
I'm saying this the 3rd time not all the time lol

how much was the amp you wanted to import? i'm thinking of importing one to thru musican's friend but a lot of things to do to get it in man still learning... aiyah..

anyway instead of us listing amps, think you have to go try out man. you can try looking for amps that take pedals well as you want different tone for your different genre of music. try blackwood or swee lee they allow you to test without giving you the devils stare. ( if you know what i mean) haha

The amps are cheap, i got my guitar from GuitarCentre, they dun ship certain brands internationally so i had to have them shipped to a vpost USA address and have it shipped to singapore, free shipping above $150 for USA. But amps are heavy, thus the shipping fee would cost a bomb.

Yeah i noe testing would always be the best bet on getting sumting that suits u, but the thing is ... i noe practically nothing abt them? Plus i dun have ppl ard me to guide me and sales ppl... well... u nv really know when they're giving "sales talk" or when they're really trying to help... makes it hard to trust them a little.

Thks to Likui & Mus... i'm on a budget here (below $200?)... so i'm hoping to get more out of the amp... perhaps one with pedals, as suggested above.

Will try to find someone who noes sumting abt such stuff... and maybe get them to take me on a educational tour or sumting... yeah i was at swee lee to search for my guitar but they didn't have it.

hey vera, i assume from what u said above "perhaps one with pedals, as suggested above.", u prefer a one that can take pedals well? if that is so, it would be good that u get one with good cleans. but under the 200dollar mark, i can think only of two - vox pathfinder 15r and roland cube.

the vox has good cleans, medium gain overdrive(unable a chugg), built in tremolo and reverb. the only set back for it, imo, is the lack of a mids control. but then again, there are always eq pedals. i have it. got it for 1202nd hand. first hand at city music around 200? forgot already.

the cube, from what i remember, has decent cleans for an amp which has built in distortion modellers. the series has a few models. decent cleans, inbuilt dist, some models have effects too, i dig the X series though, which has the power squeezer feature that functions like an attenuator, giving u max dist at low vols. available at sweelee or 2nd hand. prices are different between models.

oh ya lucky u din buy the amp from the website. Think you will also have to invest in transformer as their US voltage different. hai

Anyway i have a marshall MG15cdr. been with me for 6 years. A good amp. Decent cleans, with spring reverb and overdrive/Boost options under the cost of 200sg

best option would be the roland cube series, u could probably get the cube 30(not cube30x) at around 230, the sounds a lol digital though, so yup, 200 is a kinda shallow budget

If you want a solid state amplifier that takes pedals well, my choices would be:
- Vox Pathfinder 15R
- Ibanez TBX30R

Currently, I'm a user of the Vox Pathfinder. IMO, it takes pedals really well and gives good clean. I like the clean very much. The only setback is that it has NO MID control knob so you can't tweak your mids. Don't worry, the amp has a decent amount of mids that might suit your liking.Credits to kernelspy for helping me out.

The Ibanez TBX30 has a steeper price compared to the Pathfinder. It takes pedals well and has good cleans too. The amp distortion is great if you tweak it properly.

You should try the amps out and see which is best for you. Good luck! ;)

I know you're really eager to try out your guitar with an amp but save a lil more and get a Roland Cube. A microcube is really suitable for beginners i think

THks to all who have provided me with brand names... , i will head down to the stores and ask ard abit before getting one... my guitar's nt here anyways... just trying to research abit before it arrives :p

greetings my friend 8-)

you got yourself a great guitar to begin with, do avoid getting a practice grade amp as a compliment, it won't do justice to the guitar. ask yourself if you'd be playing with pedals or merely content with just an amp (especially one with a superb on-board distortion).

if you are working within the $200+/- budget, i'd suggest you save a little more & consider this amp: http://theguitaraddict.blogspot.com/2008/10/randall-ninja-combo.html

more importantly, invest in an amp that will manifest the guitar's inherent qualities/ resonance.

Hey, thanks everyone for being so helpful. A friend has offered to let me have him amp for free... a roland cube. So i guess meanwhile i will use this... and save up so that i can get a better amp when i'm better at it.

THanks again! Your help is very much appreciated!!!! ;)
