Exactly.
If you're the singer / frontman and start to think "Oh no, if I do this, then people will think I'm an idiot, if I do that, people will say I look like a fag, if I do..." , you'll never do anything on stage and will be labeled as an idiot, fag and whatever the hell you were thinking you are. Because YOU ARE. The thing is, people pay you (or your organizer) to see you perform. They're not here to see you freeze up and just move your mouth, they want to be entertained! That's what they're here for, and that's what you'll have to deliver.
If you're allowed to do fillers between songs, then it's even more important to be entertaining. It's okay if you have nothing particularly important to say, just try to interact with the crowd. Like I said, they want to be entertained, so just communicating and letting them know that you are singing to THEM would be nice. Like, "What's up you alllllll, how's you doin'?", while cheesy and stuff, engages the audience attention to YOU, so in your next song, they'll be more interested in YOU. Whilst some may argue that some audiences are dead, it's okay, move on, don't get nervous because they don't respond immediately.
Also, as a frontman singer, you will have to draw attention to other members of the band. It will be tough, but least you could do is introduce your members. And during their respective solo parts (if they have), say something like "GIVE IT UP FOR -lead guitarist's name-!!!", you know, let your own band members and the audience know that you yourself know what's going on, and at the same time shift the audience's attention to the person who is supposed be soloing. This also gives some encouragement to the soloist because he knows that if he screws up now, he's dead.
That's my 2 cents worth.
