Hi people.

I've been playing rhythm on my guitar for some time already and I want to go on another step, which is to play lead guitar.

I tried to search the internet for resources but I don't know what to start on 1st.

I tried doing solos, bends but it sucks and doing riffs, sometimes i go off-note....

My genre is based on alternative rock and rock.

What should i start on 1st? Scales? Riffs? Memorize notes on fretboard? And is it possible to introduce some songs which has easy solos?

And maybe is it possible to introduce me to websites which teaches lead guitar step by step?

Thx.

For videos, go on youtube. Heh. Plenty there.

As for songs, I think sweet child of mine is good. Crazy Train. Uh.. Enter Sandman? Highway to Hell. Yeap.

Just start playing the lead parts for the song and you'll be a lead guitarist. Lol.

you can start with anything basic, but takes times...don't expect yourself to sound perfect immediately..bending, sliding, pull-off, hammer-ons all takes times to perfect....not an overnight thingy...

just keep doing it...and you perfection will come naturally.....

Go to here,
www.justinguitar.com

the website helped me through alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are aural classes, basic chords, rhytm guitar and much more.
Its also easy to navigate.Just go to the lesson index n u can see how much lessons is on the site.I'm a beginner n the site me with my first few chords and thought me stuff abt guitar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started by learning about scales. Memorising the fretboard will be a plus-point, but it will come to you sooner or later.

Cheers! :)

Scales scales and scales . Learn pentatonic scales first, thats the most basic if you want to play lead . I start learning pent. scales first . I'm a self-taught student. I find out everything by myself . From pent. scales i jump to other scales like major and all that . You can go a variety of notes all over the fretbord if you learn scales coz you can jump here and there . So ya pent.scales first . You can see guitarist like Slash, he uses the pent alot . Like fors ongs from gnr sweet child o' mine and dont cry those are good examples .

thx people. even justinguitar or cyberfret site said the same thing; start learning the major scale/pentatonic scale.

well as much as you would like to jump into lead playing as soon as possible, make sure you work your lead techniques out first. I made the mistake of having super poor technique that is bugging me real bad now cause i jumped into lead playing without proper playing habits.

yeah and start off pentatonic, record a simple chord progression and see what you can do over it's rhythm to make that sound interesting, after all, lead playing isn't just about solos and stuff but the fill-ins, higher voicings, runs, making things interesting based on various genres.

anyway technique wise it'd be good if you could find a teacher for supervision once in awhile, to see if you are nailing it right. (:

- Chord Progression
- Scales
- Alternate Picking
- Palm Muting
- Hammer ons/Pull-offs
- Bending
- Tapping
- Harmonics
- Sweep Picking

Take it step by step. Practice slowly at first then gradually increase in speed. A metronome helps. :)

Chromatics. Metronome. Chord and Scale sheets/computer screen. Grip a guitar pick, Up down up down up down up down up down..............

THEN, economy picking. After more time, THEN, sweep alittle. Then sweep more. But dont forget your up down up down up down up down....

BUT, always learn music theory. Digest it one step at a time. Unless as a kid you know already then ok lah~

hmmm, try learning the pentatonic minor scale or blues scale in all 5 positions...

since the pentatonic scale has on 5 note, "Penta"... its pretty easy to work out 5 positions... try in the key of A or E first... it might help... from there u'll figure out the diff keys.( depending on chord progression)

learn first half of the neck... (fret 1 to 12. 13 onwards is just a repetition.)

then try variations of the moving up and down the scale... try flowing from 1 shape to another.... etc etc.... just with this 5 positons... u can have lots of fun. give it a go...

try this site

might help u out
