How to choose snare drum?

actually personally for me.i just go with the sound.wat u feel comfortable with. You MUST like the sound and dont go for it just cause its pretty and everything.check out how many plys and stuff its made off.but if u just want a great sound then go bash around till u find the perfect one.IF u don know wat kinda sound u like then just go hit on every snare u see till u get ur ideal sound!! :D

DW are really gd leh i feel. try and get a second hand one it'll be alot cheaper. wat kinda music do u play? couple of things to look out for.
1. shell thickness
2. shape of bearing edge
3. how many lugs it has
4. the hoops eg die cast, triple flange, wood
5. snare bed
6. material eg maple, birch, steel
7. reinforcement hoops
a versatile snare wld be abt 14x5.5 with triple flanged hoops, ard 8 to 10 plys with 8 lugs per head. it wld probably have a 45 degree inner cut on the bearing edge with a slight 60 to 45 degree outer cut. reinforcement hoops on the older or more high end drums (DW, Tama, some pearl models). this hoops on the inside of the drum brings up the tone of the drum.

Wow! I started this thread a year and a half ago...

And just last month, I finally (after one and a half years, sheesh!) got my snare! It's a 5.5 x 14 Unlimited Craviotto snare with red satin finish.

I actually wanted to get a vintage GMS snare but they don't seem very interested in my business. So I went over to Craviotto online and Joe, the new manager, was really nice to cater to my purchase. Great drum company and great service. Very rock!

Tats an excellent piece of baby u got there, real good. Congrats. GMS makes really good drums wif its unique tone which oozes sweetness but when it comes to snare, tis craviotto is a better choice wif its superb in-house manufactured solid shell as opposed to GMS' Kellers and those mass production Unlimited series are easier on the wallet too... :p If only the lugs are as elegant as the Limited series and not as dodgy...

Ya man! I concur that the lugs are a bit...unsightly and like the reviews said, gaudy! Haha! But my drum heroine Janet Weiss loves this model (she has a 6.5 x 14 one in natural finish) that she uses for all her past Sleater-Kinney tour and the current tour with Bright Eyes, and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. So...good for her, good enough for me too. :)

But I wonder if I can change the lugs... Hmm...

Naz, Craviotto quoted me USD $700 + USD $75 for shipping. No other taxes as Joe sent it via air mail and tagged it as $50 gift. Leap of faith on both our part though, to send the snare via airmail. But it arrived safety. So... good lah, good! Haha!

Can, if you've got precise measurements, just get the lugs from someplace like http://www.drummaker.com/ Tube lugs will make it look like a Limited. Tube lugs have my fav classic vibe.

Killer man, never thought I'd hear of a Crav in SG.

ahh.. finally found someplace that caters to building ur own drums..

always wanted to make my own drums but could only source the shells.. i.e: keller shells.. hardwares, have no idea.. than there's hozea to the rescue.!

Alamak. Measurements + Woodwork = I'm not very handy at those. LOL!

I don't have a nice cam. So here it is, the one I post on MySpace. My friend says it looks like a juicy apple and she wants to bite it...
