i plan of getting new pickups for my Yamaha pacifica 112J.

Its made of Alder body , rosewood fretboard.

I mean like where can i hear samples of what every kind of pickup sound like? In the 1980s , how do people want the sound they want through pickups? go to a guitar shop and try allll sorts of pickups?

it's hard to say cause there are different factors involved. like the wood itself... the elctronics inside the guitar... the neck.. all play a factor. the best would be you'd get something similiar to your Pacifica (best if it's Pacifica) to try out the pickups...

i tot of changing my pickups on my Pacifica as well. my fren recommend i get a new guitar instead.... :D

i saw soo many pickups at plaza sinagpura. Abit attracted to Seymour Duncun Alnico 2 pro.....slash pickups but they sound kinda blunt to my liking.

How about SD Classic Stack, Classic Stack, JB hum?

there was 1 time i was dropped by sweelee warehouse at adjunied, then i saw a guitar with like pickups mounted on a wood thing which has 2 posts for the wires. I then saw a whole bunch of pickups like that hanging on a wooden panel.

I would think that that is to allow easy changing of pickups for people to test the sound...but i coudl be wrong !

The Seymour Duncan website has sound samples of the various pickups. But you will need a good ear (and memory) to distinguish between them.

The other way would be to get some second hand stock humbucks and try them out. At least they are cheaper to experiment. On average, they cost about $20 to $25 each.

Talking about pickups. Has anyone modified his guitar from a S-S-S configuration to a S-S-H? Care to share your experience, eg costs, work involved and who can do it? I thinking of doing the above mod on a cheap Samick for trial purposes.

Thanks

do u have any links or more information on them? I am very interested.

Anyway , i have short term memory so i can't remember tones well.

er.....small error there, his name is beez. i was impressed by him the first time i been there.really nice guy, knows alot of genre too

yeah..his name is Beez. great guy. he's my teacher, and if you want, can ask him to for advice. i changed my hb to seymour duncan recently, SH-11. the tone's cool, but its a high output. yeah...u go try to listen at seymourduncan.com, pacificas sound nice with the SH-11 series..juz dun get SH-8 (invader) too muddy for a pacifica...goes on nicer with a heavy body guitar. for pacifica, u can try asking Beez for recommendation, or try dimarzio...they're a killer...=) if u got cash to spare...change all 3 pickups to EMGs...the active ones...they sound great...make ur pac sound monstrous and yeah...basically, even better than fenders if u noe how to play them..=)

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Will definitely see Beez at Yamaha (it's not more Music Plaza) for help the next time I'm there.

Hope it wouldn't cost too much though. I already have the humbucker. Just need some help to replace the singe coil with the humbuck as the original space is for the single coil only. Hence must carve out more space from the body.
