How do know tell if the guitar SOUND is good when trying?

when you try a guitar in a shop etc, how do you know if the guitar sounds good or the amp you are using make it sounds good?

Pick a shitty amp and play it on neutral settings? :p

But seriously. It's more about how the guitar "feels" to you. Tone is subjective. If a guitar has that "feeling" when you're playing it, it's tone is likely to sound like harps from heaven to your ears. It's dang near impossible to pin down.

play it unplugged?
thats wad i do usually.

i think the only way u can know whether it sounds good is by using something known as the EARS... yes.. EARs

Repeat after me.. EARS..

In case u didnt know, u have Ears which is for hearing. U cannot use ur eyes, as ur eyes are meant for looking.

Neither can u use taste as guitar wood is not tasty. The strings u see are not like mee.

Ok, seriously u know if the guitar sounds good when u have actually played a dozen of them. Maybe a few dozen. Den u'll know.

try this, without plugging in the amp, strum some chords. a good guitar should have the sound being clear and having good sustain and resonance and stuff. and try feeling how long the wood vibrates lol

maybe it isnt much help but at least u can see the sustain

Guys, I think fenderfan is a newbie and your recommendations of using your ear... might not be ah... well... he wouldn't have much of an idea what good tone is aye?

If you are testing an amp, bring your set-up into the shop and run it thru the amp. This is the best way to know what you are looking for.

If you are testing a guitar, you can bring your own amp in as well... Get your domestic help to help lug in your JCM-800 stack. Though I think Uncle Davis might not take kindly to folks doing that.

where can you buy EARS??

wat sound good is wat u think sound good....ask 10 people get 10 different opinions 8O

I think guitar i go mainly for looks and playability first before truly how it sounds ... Then if it sounds good to me then i will buy ..

when buying electric, its good to know what are the puckups...

if they're brandless then u'd have to go by ear... try playing a few guitars in the shop on the same amp with a few standard settings... off all efx if theres any... just pure clean and pure drive...

don't be afraid to try the most expensive ones like those above 1k... use those guitars as the "control"

then try some around ur budget... if something around ur budget sound like one of the 1k guitars, and u like it... then thats a good one for u... if it feels like crap when playing, get it set up...

i guess, it doesn't matter. All of us made mistake when buying the first guitar, I believe. (those that think otherwise, probably have YET realize their mistake, hehehe).

And anyway, you will be plagued with G.A.S addict once you venture into the tone quest.

Everyone makes some sort of mistake with their first guitar, you should really just go and try and buy ... If you are too afraid of getting the wrong guitar the first time then you will never get a guitar ...

wah lao... really thank you all for the kind advice. they are all very constructive indeed!

seriously every suggestion can be compiled into... 10 year series man...

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU ROCK! :)
