Hi everyone. I got a guitar last week as a present from my uncle. Its a second hand guitar (my uncle used it before) and it comes with a guitar amplifier. The thing is, for the past week all i can do is to any wee how pull the strings on the guitar. I cant play anything. My uncle had gone to Aust and would not be back for some time. So how do i get about playing music from that heavy guitar? Thanks alot.

what guitar is it? any indication of brands? can psot some pics up?

first of all, learn some chords. helps in playing any song. or you can start by learning a song that you like, granted its not that hard.

learn powerchords. (the shape and hopefully the names)...then visit www.mysongbook.com or wad to get some blink 182 songs and start strumming. next step go take some hard rock songs and start learning solos.....next next! visit rusty cooley's web...ok i shall not touch on tt.:)

the guitar and the amplifier is squier brand. So what songs should i learn?

You should ask yourself that question, what do you like? Metal? Pop? If you give us a a genre or a band then someone will be able to single out the easier songs for you.

I like bands like 3 doors down, greenday, lacuna coil...but it all seems too complicated. I just learnt how to read tabs. But i know which string to play but i dont know when to sound the strings!!

What is actually the amplifier for? Is it only for the sound to become louder? If so, why cant we just plug the guitar into a normal stereo system???

you need a guitar teacher/peer to teach you. That helps more than a string of Q&A on these forum as I'm sure you have lots and lots of questions to ask.

Good threads to read here are the How to Guitar sticky, and the Guitar Gear sticky over at the Guitar Gear subsection of the forum. Also, anatomy of a guitar sticky at the Guitar Gear subsection.

Alright, thanks alot. Most prob i will be learning online coz i saw that the pricing is like 25 dollars an hour. WOAH!!!!

yes you can plug it into any stereo system, but the stereo system might not be built for guitar input, expecially if you're using any distortion pedals. amplifiers are specially made for guitars. like, usual amps for guitars and tube amps for bass guitars.
the downside of using tabs is you dont know when to play a certain note. so tabs are used when you've heard the song before or you're playing along with the song. coz you know the music, therefore know when to pluck which string.
if you wanna do self-learning, cyberfret.com if the place to be. you can find some video lessons, "steal this video" at ultimate-guitar.com
look out for the first lesson. its quite useful teaching simple chord progression and some songs to sing along with it.

so, good luck to you... :D
and also, welcome to SOFT!!!!
(i actually counted your posts here. realised that it tallies with your post count. so you must be new here. haha.)

Thanks alot, I decided to learn the guitar only after a week plus after getting the guitar because i'm currently working so the time to dedicate to guitar is limited since i work 1 to 9 everyday.+ I watch on tv how others play the guitar and i know nuts about it makes me "sian ji pua". Thats y suddenly want to learn.

You can find answers to most of your questions on the internet. Or learn from a friend who knows his stuff.
Where do you live?

But I suppose the people here will be more than happy to answer your questions.

I live in Yishun. Yea i guess the people here will help me out as i go along. Today i be practicing scales.

sorry to hijack this thread, but i have a question. how do you sustain a note to let it ring, even after you removed your fingers from the fretboard.
for example you execute a pinch harmonic, then you want to remove your hand from the fretboard, but you still want the pinch harmonic to continue ringing.

thanks loads

you gotta hold it down to sustain the note. the moment you let go, your doing a pull-off already.
