hi hat work

hey guys alot of dudes i noticed( including me) have really shit tech when it comes to controlling the hi hat with my foot. wat do u guys know abt it and how can u improve apon it. like for instance when u need that solid "chick" sound or when u need a washy splash from the hats with ur foot. or even a clave pattern while ur playing a rythmn.

regards mark

For me:

Chick - Heel up, ball of foot never leaves the footboard, foot comes up a split second before the chick in order to reduce cymbal ring

Splash - Use the heel to give it a hard step, then immediately getting my foot out of the way... if sizzle, then apply some pressure... depends on how big the gap between the hats are.

Bark - Heel toe.

Treat left foot like right foot? Practice RRRRRRRR LLLLLLLL

Hope that helps.

yea many there are some drummer who have really great grooves, but they neglet the left-foot-time-keeping thing. well, i'd suggest u start by playing straight crotchets or quavers with ur left leg while doing more simple grooves.

those clave shit are pretty advanced.. too advanced for me.. i guess those clave rhythms help alot in doing solos, but we have to take one step at a time yea?

A songo with a left foot clave is really fun to play, but unfortunately it's so hard for me that I only know one songo pattern with left foot clave, at most can only mess around with either 2/3 or 3/2 clave patterns.

Soloing with left foot clave is insane!!! The only person in Singapore that I've seen that can do it is Tama Goh.

Tama Goh :prayer: :prayer: :prayer: :prayer:

where is he now anyway? he seems very erm, how do u say.. very underground now.. no news about him!! COME ON MAN I WANNA SEE HIM IN ACTION!!

who's tama goh? his name sounds like the sushi with egg.

There's alot of drummers in singapore who can play groove and solo with their left-foot doing clave pattern. Fairoz, Mohd Noor, Alvin, Anuar, Misran and lots more. If you wanna check out sound-clips on singapore/south-east asian drummers doing crazy independant drumming, go to SDC forum, there's a few clips there  :D

I think he might be involved in Singapore Idol again, since he was the house drummer the last time.

Hi guys, please show some respect to Mr Tama Goh. He is in the league of Jimmy Lee, the late Edmund Branson, Gordon Jensen, Mohd Noor, to name a few.

He is part of the jazz trio of Jeremy Monteiro, and has been in the music industry for very long time and is very well sought after in Asia!

okie guys, i dunno how this topic went so off. but if u guys cld offer some tips on good left foot tech not nesscessarily clave patterns, i wld be most grateful.
do u guys prefer the rocking method or the heel up stomping method. i'm in between both at the moment

How the topic went so off? Maybe you can ask the guy who started the sushi thingy.

Ok, back to your question. I use both, i.e. the rocking and the stomping method. I use the rocking method when I'm playing jazz, and the stomping for the rest of the music i play.

heh.who is tama goh?

sorry.. anybody have clips of tama goh playing. i would like to see.. jimmy lee rocks man

hey guys,
after hours of hard practice instead of going after chicks, i've found the way that best works for me. its sorta like a stomp but not really either. heel up slightly from the pedal lift ur foot up just slight then come down. its very impt to listen for a gd sound. it shld be a nice clean "chick". sorta like a hand clap.
for a smoother hi hat opening with the stick, i found that if u use the middle portion of the cymbal (roughly 3inches from the edge) you get a very nice sound. cleaner.
