HHX Legacy Series

hey ppl, ive tested the sound of the HHX legacies on sabian sound check and i must say, they are one bunch of horrible and nasty (literally) cymbals, a disappointment coming from dave weckl who gave us the celebrated hhx evolution series... what are your views on these cymbals? am i the oni one here thinking they sound bad?

The Legacy series were created to suit Weckl's darker side of sound as compared to his other signature, the HHX Evolution..

Some drummers prefer darker sounding cymbals. Sabian description for the Legacy fits perfectly for its purpose.

As Weck himself states out the cymbals clearly:
"Legacy is the darker side of my sound. These cymbals are vibrant, trashy and beautiful... all at once. 'Tone Texture' gives these cymbals a great deal of dark, musical color that encompasses the full tonal spectrum but digs way down deep, for a broader, more complex tonal personality. The hats 'speak' crisply and cleanly, but always with that simmering HHX tone. The Legacy Ride has great articulation over a dark cushion of sound, while the Heavy Ride is big, clean and crisp yet warm. The crashes are punchy, dark and complex. They're designed to punctuate without overpowering. For something different there's the O-Zone Ride which has five 2" holes in its upper half and is great for riding or crashing; I can sit back on it or dig in and stir up a turbulence of dark, angry tone. 'The 'Tone Texture' of these cymbals makes Legacy a compelling consideration for any drummer looking for sounds that offer a new richness to their playing."

Have U ever try out any HHX series cymbals? Be it their crashes, ride or hihats? I have 3 different HHX crashes and the word "tone" is an understatement for the HHX series.

yea i really love hhx crashes too, ive tried an 18" stage at a frens house and loads more on sound check... however i seriously dont like the legacy series, well at least most of it with the exception of the 22 heavy ride... the splashes and crashes sound really bad to me, it sounds distorted and dark at the same time... as for the ozone ride... the underontes are way echoey and weird sounding... maybe it will sound better in real life compared to sound check, but from experience, sabians usually sound better on sound check than in real life, but they sound a tad different no doubt... so hopefully when sweelee does bring in legacy's i can see if my opinion stands

Actually IMO the soundcheck for the legacy's are pretty damn nasty, it sounds like they used really horrible and cheap mikes to record the sounds! it sounds significantly different from the other cymbals... maybe they'll update it someday with better recordings.

dudeeeee, u really have to get that cymbal and try it out for urself. u can't judge from a bloody sound recording, there are so many variables. first u need to ask urself wat kind of cymbal ur looking for and wat situation ur going to be using them in and how they sound with all the other cymbals.
rock, funk, blues. jazz, acoustic, latin. i generally class them on wat i use them for. u can get really bright stuff like the Zild A for latin as well but probably not for bossa nova.
u need to see if ur going to play open air gigs, very small quiet gigs or ur going to record with them. for live bigger sizes are good and u dun really have to worry abt how resonant they are cause they sound needs to travel. not true that the mics will throw the sound for u all the time. normally the not so gd sound people in studios will want dry cymbals. but generally dun get to resonant cymbals, really big thin ones.
this is just wat i've come across and it works for me, may be diff for other dudes

I've turn into a big-size crashes lover for a few reason:

a) More volume (good for live situation) and sometimes in recording.
b) Fits the kind of music dat i'm playing
c) No worries abt being drowned out by other instruments.

I think what you hear when u play the ride cymbal is completely different from what they audience hears... try to bring a friend along to check out how it sounds from an audience perspective.

Yes you can't decide on a cymbal from a sound recording, but the sabian soundchecks are remarkably similar to the real thing... except for the hand hammered range. Dunno why the legacys sound especially bad...
