hi all, im using a epiphone les paul custom , a laney lx65d, and a boss mt-2.
I like the sound of my distortion, especially when i play power chords. But however when i play single notes, the notes are not really distorted and the notes are not distinct. does the problem lie with the amp, guitar or the pedal or is it just my playing.

Sounds like you'll be needing a strat very soon... Just Kidding...

Try work around your pickup selection and tone controls. You may want to overcompensate your settings; i.e. Let the distortion growl a bit more by increasing gain with your guitar settings set to full and once that is done, fiddle with your volume and tone knobs to get the sound you want for all pickups. With this, you can always get that high gain distortion by cranking the volume and tone knob on your guitar.

i think what u trying to say that the tone is thin?if that is the case, i believe ur setting for rhythm parts are metal kinda scoop mid tone, hence for single notes they normally get drown or not as clear ...
u need to increase the mid , in order to make the notes stand out.
to get both setting, imo u need an eq pedal or any other pedal that can increase the mid 600hz, or just twist the knob on ur amp! haha ...gd luck on ur tone quest ...

one more thing pick harder for the single notes :) it might do wonders ..

I used to use a rather bassy tone for metal, with mids and treble around the same level, but my experience was that single notes weren't particularly muffled but they just didn't sound that loud. So I increased my mids and got somewhat like Slayer's guitar tone. More crushing for metal and every note rings out. Just that it doesn't sound as pleasant for other stuff.

Hi, Should you play single notes, change your pickup selection. and also having an eq helps cos you might want to have abit different sounds when playing single notes or solos and get the guitar tones right.. hope this helps..
