Help with buying Elec. Guitar

Hi everyone, I need some help on getting a good beginners Electric guitar. Have been playing some simple stuff on a old classical for about a month or two, but other than that I'm relatively newb.

My budget for the guitar alone is not more than $500. I think this would be good so I can get a guitar that can last me longer (thus no need to upgrade to a better guitar so soon)

The guitar probably needs to be very versatile, because the type of music I want to play can stretch from bluesy stuff (John Mayer) to J-Rock to heavy rock songs.

I was eyeing the Epiphone G310, but I'm not sure if it is suitable. Oh and I don't really like Ibanez, for some reason, they feel very weird.

Some advice please? Thanks :D

any guitar would last you (regardless of brand name/ price) as long as you really like it & don't make it a point to put it down & revere others...

anyway, some considerations: http://theguitaraddict.blogspot.com/2009/12/recommendations-les-paul-alike-guitars.html

@subversion

I see, thanks for telling me, and for the recommendations. May i ask where I might be able to find the Rally LP and if it is in my price range? might go and try it out.

that's not an LP, in fact, nothing there is an LP, unless it says Gibson on the headstock (or Epiphone, for that matter...).

the Rally GL300 is highly recommended, it's available at Standard Value, both in the woodlands/ peninsular branches. refer to SV's homepage for the list prices of their products.

i am currently having the Tanglewood under close scrutiny, it costs more (slightly) than the Rally which keeps the price in the sub-$400 bracket...

Thanks subversion, I will check out the SV branch sometime soon.

By the way, do you have any recommendations for sg-like guitars in my budget, like the epiphone g310 or 400?

with regards to the hardcase question yep you can. depends on your guitar shape blah blah etc.

Go to Davis/Music theme scout the area there. Most things you're looking for for a beginner can be found there

In summary, work with what you have within your budget.

A high end guitar does not mean a good guitar in the hands of the wrong player.

Get a guitar that suits your liking, shape colour etc. The feel of the guitar is extremely important as well. The differences in neck radius, scale length all affect your playing and more importantly the amp you are playing through

Be sure to try out the guitar before purchasing and also listen to advice but not necessarily follow it.

Guitar A may feel good to player A but may suck to player B. Its subjective. Do not be swayed easily by the opinions of others.

At the end of the day what matters most is yourself.
