Help with action!!!!!!!!!

Ok, the relief on my les paul neck is about 0.6mm(I measured at the 7th fret, holding down at the 1st and last fret) at the low E string. There´s probably no problem with the nut coz it doesn´t buzz very much when i play the open strings and the 1st 3 frets).

The low E string is about 2 mm(5/64") above the 12th fret and the high e string is about 1.6 mm(1/16") at the 12 fret.

BUT the 3 lower strings buzz a lot when i play from the 5th fret onwards, especially the low E string.

Any idea on how I can solve this?? Subversion? or any other kind souls?

Thanks in advance,

James

is that the ideal LP set up? i wouldn´t know, my action on all my guitars is simply a straight neck & then measurements taken @ 12th fret, for both bass & treble sides. any buzzing/ choking then it´s a trial & error- raise/ lower the action accordingly...

from your description, you have a fairly low action there, there´ll be buzzing around the 7th fret or thereabouts. this is normal, it´s merely eliptical buzz- the vibration of the strings due to low action. if it´s a real buzz then it´ll be there even if you raise the action (which you should experiment with). if you are using a set of .010s in there, raise the action, bro.

otherwise switch to .0095 set- recommended.

Hi sub, yea I´m using 010s. the action i have on is the factory standard. so i guess it shud be quite ideal, although i would prefer it a little lower...

dunno if neck warp has anything to do wif this...damn...

btw whats the relief on ur ax(les paul?) like?

when u say straight neck i´m sure u dun mean perfectly straight rite? coz it´s impossible to play without buzzes...at least that´s what i´ve learned frm many sources...

Anyway Thanks for the advice!

James

yup, my LP´s neck is ramrod straight (action: 2mm bass, about 1.6mm treble @ 12th fret) & there´s eliptical buzz all over the neck but after i talked to paul gilbert, i have another perpective on neck ´buzz´. i have .0095 set in there...

paul gilbert´s action´s very low, his neck is buzzung excessively but he doesn´t mind because that action helps him. as long as it doesn´t manifest thru the amp, it´s game. i´m with PG

Hiya... I got an Ibanez Roadstar II (RG440). There´s something wrong with the truss, adjusted already stilll can´t.. hiaz..

also the back plate (to cover the trem and springs is gone).

Any ppl noes where i can get the back plate ?

subversion you´re making me jealous..talked to PG in person last year(or was it this year)? btw i wasn´t into him until last month..when i bought a racer x album at a sale..that man sure can play..now i´m gonna listen to his older stuff.

btw what´s eliptical buzz?

Thanks!

Prataz- Davis sells spare rear cover plates (if it´s still in stock). identify your exact model & purchase one, do not go there & start asking them... some truss rods are simply unresponsive. depends on what you wanna cure- convex/ concave arch. at any one attempt, give it a 1/4 turn & wait for results, before your proceed further...

eliptical buzz- unavoidable buzzing due to the string coming into contact with the fret immediately after the fretted note, due to its vibration.

i didn´t attend PG´s 2nd clinic here, i met him during his first clinic @ the MFO. Racer X´s latest release is impressive, it´s a little heavy in fact, hence the title- Getting Heavier. there wasn´t much flash from PG in Mr. Big though, i enjoy his solo efforts.

Hmmz the neck is coolz now manz

thanx

But now got other problems hiaz....

The locking nut when i lock will cause the strings to be sharp.

When i wrack the trem really hard hez... the strings go sharp.... sigh... i guess i need an expert to help me setup this baby

that´s what the fine tuners at the bridge is for. after locking the nut, any tuning discrepencies are rectified via the fine tuners.

unless you get the Edge series trem, tuning stability is an issue.

Thanx.....

but the problem is that my bridge is an edge (1980s roadstar II)

Hmmmz anyplaces where i can get a proper setup for this guitar?

Yo subversion!

Care to share wif us wat´s the good point bout havin that small amout of fret-buzz that doesn´t amplify thru the amp? How does this action help??

this is actually a plus point for fans of low-action. the point is- it´s ok if the low action manifests buzzing, as long as it eases your playing. will of course relate to those who shred more than anyone else.

some of us are very particular with fret buzz to the point that a slight buzz equates an anomaly... if you swear by very low action, fret buzz is unavoidable. try not to pick too hard, or if it´s possible, don´t pick at all... just kidding

But don´t u think having fret-buzzes would shorten sustain?? but as you´ve said, it´s a good set-up for shredders

cos u ain´t gonna need sustain for more then a sec =D

if it´s not a true fret buzz, it shouldn´t last so much as to hinder sustain. if it does, then it should be addressed.
